EDINBURG - University of Texas System officials say medical education offerings need to be expanded in the Rio Grande Valley.
UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa says that would be a step toward the fast-growing region eventually getting its own UT System medical school.
Cigarroa is scheduled to lay out details Friday in Edinburg at the Regional Academic Health Center, where research focuses on health issues prevalent in border communities.
Cigarroa is a surgeon originally from Laredo.
In 2011, regents voted to invest $30 million in science and health education in South Texas.
In May, UT System regents endorsed developing new medical schools in Austin and South Texas, but the schools are still several years from opening.
