Join as a part of the rebellion - technical staff needed as well as soldiers. Any sort of skills your character has to offer, the rebellion welcomes it. These are the ones who remain above ground and fight for the sake of humanity.
Or perhaps you're looking for more of a disposable role, maybe join as a guard at the detention centers where Americans are being kept in an attempt to retrain and mold the young minds into behaving much like drones. They are stripped of their individuality and lies to daily. As a guard you take patrols above ground and shifts down under with the people.
