Compared to sizable companies, small to medium sized businesses (SMB) seem to be less concerned with mobile security because they feel too ?unimportant? to be attacked. This, of course, is not true.
In the first half of 2012, small businesses accounted for 36 percent of all targeted cyber attacks, up from 18 percent at the end of 2011, according to Symantec data. These SMBs are becoming more frequent victims of mobile cyber attacks due to their lack of device defenses and their position as ?gateways? to larger firms? or consumer data.
And while many SMBs deem security a major priority, most aren?t taking the proper precautions. Fifty-five percent of small businesses classify security as a major mobile risk, but only 16 percent have a mobility policy in place, according to CompTIA?s Second Annual Trends in Enterprise Mobility report published in April.
Many have mobility policies that don?t cover critical security areas like personal device use, transmission and storage of data, and public Wi-Fi accessibility. Even more disconcerting: 37 percent of policies don?t include a protocol for lost devices, even though almost half of businesses identified device loss as their most common mobile security incident.
Security breaches can cost thousands or millions of dollars in damage and put a business down for months at a time, but many SMB cyber-crimes are preventable. The IT channel is full of firms that offer ways to create or strengthen preventative and disaster recovery plans for businesses of all sizes.
Whether your enterprise mobility policy and solutions are outsourced or managed internally, there are passcode and encryption strategies, software, and monitoring tools that can help prevent damaging data breaches from happening, or lessen the blow of those that do.
Here are a few tips for developing a more effective SMB mobility policy:
As mobile technology continues to evolve, SMBs must be proactive in implementing cohesive processes to combat imminent threats. Prioritizing security and letting go of the misconception that SMBs are immune takes time and effort, but it can help keep an organization from a world of unwelcome chaos.

CANNES (Reuters) - Walking the red carpet of the world's most famous film showcase is a test of nerves for celebrities, not helped by wind, rain and the chaos of hundreds of photographers shouting their names.
From choosing the perfect dress and hairdo, to trying not to trip on the famous red steps, the pressure is on for movie stars and glitterati at the 12-day Cannes film festival on the swanky French Riviera which wraps up on May 26.
"It's always scary and I'm always intimidated by these things," actress Carey Mulligan told Reuters TV after her entrance in the pouring rain at the festival's premiere of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" in a pale pink Dior gown.
"There's always a lot of pressure. Girls have lots of pressure. But I felt great and comfortable. Apart from the rain it was all pretty smooth," she said.
An actress who can smile, wave to the cameras and sign autographs while battling wet feet, goosebumps and mussed hairdos deserves an acting award.
"I'm going to blow away! I feel like Mary Poppins!" joked jury member Nicole Kidman, wearing a spring-like floral gown, also by Dior, on opening night.
In the latest celebrity wardrobe malfunction, "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria inadvertently exposed herself as she hiked up her gown to avoid red carpet puddles on Saturday.
The foul weather has meant local stores have done brisk sales of jackets, sweaters, closed-toe shoes and umbrellas.
Some stars still managed to stay immaculately groomed. French actress Marion Cotillard arrived at Monday's premiere of "Blood Ties" by director Guillaume Canet and co-starring Clive Owen with a high beehive hairdo that would have been impossible without a girl's best friend - hairspray.
Even less-glamorous dealmakers who head to the festival to buy and sell new films have been affected by the weather.
"If this Cannes market turns out to be slower than usual, I will blame it entirely on wet socks," tweeted Magnolia Pictures executive Peter Van Steemburg.
CLASHING PINK
With all eyes in the entertainment industry on Cannes, making a memorable red carpet entrance is a must for stars, and brands from Swarovski to L'Oreal also seek to benefit.
"Now the movies, and especially the red carpet, are becoming the new fashion catwalks," said Swarovski's public relations director Francois Ortarix. "As a brand, we had to be here also."
Stars managed to keep the fashion stakes high, with fashionistas like China's Fan Bingbing showing off new outfits at a series of parties.
Dior, with its full skirts and elegant appeal, appeared to be the favorite of the fashion set this year as new designer Raf Simons has made wooing the A-listers a priority.
Cotillard and actress Jessica Biel attended Dior's cruise collection fashion show in Monaco on Saturday night. It was marked by bold colors and pointy-toed shoes.
But some opted for Chanel, such as "Harry Potter" actress Emma Watson who chose a pink and black sequined dual-tone dress for the premiere of Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring". Model and actress Milla Jovovich chose a black and white floral sequined Chanel in one of the few bold prints to hit the red carpet.
An even more striking choice was made by "Baywatch" actor David Hasselhoff, in town to promote his new movie "Killing Hasselhoff", who wore a fuchsia pink shirt under his tuxedo.
"Red carpet, pink shirt ... I know, sorry," he quipped.

May 22, 2013 ? Researchers at the Universities of Leeds and Chicago have uncovered an important mechanism behind the generation of astrophysical magnetic fields such as that of the Sun.
Scientists have known since the 18th Century that the Sun regularly oscillates between periods of high and low solar activity in an 11-year cycle, but have been unable to fully explain how this cycle is generated.
In the 'Information Age', it has become increasingly important to be able to understand the Sun's magnetic activity, as it is the changes in its magnetic field that are responsible for 'space weather' phenomena, including solar flares and coronal mass ejections. When this weather heads in the direction of Earth it can damage satellites, endanger astronauts on the International Space Station and cause power grid outages on the ground.
The research, published in the journal Nature, explains how the cyclical nature of these large-scale magnetic fields emerges, providing a solution to the mathematical equations governing fluids and electromagnetism for a large astrophysical body.
The mechanism, known as a dynamo, builds on a solution to a reduced set of equations first proposed in the 1950s which could explain the regular oscillation but which appeared to break down when applied to objects with high electrical conductivity. The mechanism takes into account the 'shear' effect of mass movement of the ionised gas, known as plasma, which makes up the Sun. More importantly it does so in the extreme parameter regime that is relevant to astrophysical bodies.
"Previously, dynamos for large, highly conducting bodies such as the Sun would be overwhelmed by small-scale fluctuations in the magnetic field. Here, we have demonstrated a new mechanism involving a shear flow, which served to damp these small-scale variations, revealing the dominant large-scale pattern," said Professor Steve Tobias, from the University of Leeds' School of Mathematics, a co-author of the research.
What is more, this mechanism could be used to describe other large, spinning astronomical bodies with large-scale magnetic fields such as galaxies.
The dynamo was developed through simulations using the high-performance computing facilities located at the University of Leeds.
"The fact that it took 50 years and huge supercomputers shows how complicated the dynamo process really is." said Prof Fausto Cattaneo, from the University of Chicago's Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
The presence of spots on the Sun has been known since antiquity, and further analysed after the invention of the telescope by Galileo in the 16th Century. However, their cyclic nature, with periods of high activity (lots of sunspots) and low activity (few sunspots) following each other, was not identified until the 18th Century. At the start of the 20th Century it was then recognised that these sunspots were the result of the Sun's magnetic field. Since then much effort has been devoted to understanding what processes lead to the formation of sunspots and the origin of their cyclic behaviour.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Michael Jackson's doctor was not the only person working on the singer's ill-fated "This Is It" tour without a fully executed contract, a corporate attorney for concert promoter AEG Live LLC testified Monday.
The tour's director Kenny Ortega was being paid based on an agreement laid out solely in emails, AEG General Counsel Shawn Trell told jurors.
Jackson's mother is trying to show AEG was negligent in hiring Conrad Murray, the doctor who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's June 2009 death.
Katherine Jackson claims AEG failed to properly investigate Murray before hiring him to serve as her son's tour physician, and that the company missed or ignored red flags about the singer's health before his death. AEG denies it hired Murray.
In court, attorneys for Katherine Jackson displayed emails sent a month before the death of her son in which Murray's contract terms were laid out.
Trell said those emails did not demonstrate an employment relationship ? a key element of the case that will be decided by a jury of six men and six women.
Trell acknowledged, however, that Ortega was paid for his work on the shows despite working under terms laid out only in a series of emails.
"Kenny Ortega is different from Conrad Murray," Trell testified.
Michael Jackson died before signing a $150,000 a month contract for Murray to serve as his doctor on the "This Is It" tour. AEG's attorneys say Jackson's signature was required to finalize Murrays' contract.
An email displayed in court showed Murray's contract terms. Other documents indicated AEG budgeted $300,000 to pay Murray for his work with Jackson in May and June of 2009.
Another email said executive Paul Gongaware informed others that Murray would be "full time" on the tour by mid-May.
Plaintiff's attorney Brian Panish asked Trell to agree with a statement that Murray was working for AEG.
"I would totally disagree with that statement," Trell said, noting that Ortega and Murray were considered independent contractors.
Trell was the second AEG executive to testify in the trial, which is entering its fourth week. AEG attorneys have yet to question him.
He also testified that the company obtained an insurance policy that covered the possible cancellation of some of the "This Is It" shows after a physician evaluated the singer.
Trell testified that five days before Jackson's death, top AEG executives were informed the singer was in poor health. By that point, Ortega had sent executives an email titled "Trouble at the front" detailing Jackson's problems.
"There are strong signs of paranoia, anxiety, and obsessive-like behavior," Ortega wrote to AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips. Jackson's symptoms were reminiscent of behavior that led to the cancellation of an HBO concert earlier in the decade. Ortega wrote.

Despite the dismal weather and tight household budgets, 2013 is going to be a record year for the Staycation trend, as 65% of Britons opt to take their summer holiday at home this year. This is a significant increase on the past two years, when 41% and 35% of Britons respectively took a domestic break. With the average trip costing Britons ?399.28 this year, (?34.19 reduction from last year), this investment will boost the UK tourism industry by ?12 billion (up ?3.3bn from last year). These findings have been revealed today in a new holiday index by Travelodge.
The hotel chain?s fifth annual holiday report surveyed 3,000 British adults to investigate their summer holiday intentions and revealed that 42% of these Staycationers are taking a week?s holiday in the UK this summer, 15% are indulging in a two week break on British shores and a third (33%) are splitting their holidays over three short domestic breaks so that they can visit a series of locations.? ? ?
Other key findings revealed that the city break has overtaken the traditional seaside holiday as our favourite Staycation break. Listed below are the top five most popular types of Staycation breaks that Britons are taking this year.
City Break (31%)
Rural / Countryside break (27%)
Seaside (22%)
Visiting family (18%)
Visiting an historic site (15%)?
The holiday report also revealed that for the first time in five years, Cornwall has lost its crown as the nation?s top Staycation destination and dropped to fourth position. Jumping up the poll to the number one and two positions are capital cities, London and Edinburgh. The Lake District fell from second position to third place this year.
Grant Hearn, Travelodge CEO said: ?The Staycation trend accelerating to record levels and boosting our economy by ?12 billion this year, is a very welcome sign, and hopefully this is the start of our 2012 Olympics legacy gain.
?During 2012, our capital city was showcased in its true glory to all corners of the UK and the world, and it?s a great result that London has been crowned as the top Staycation destination for 2013.?
?However we cannot rest on our laurels, as one of Britain?s biggest business sectors, the opportunity to grow is still great. We are not yet near to unlocking the true potential of our industry. British tourism needs to be treated like a serious business sector and the Government needs to move our industry from the ineffective Department of Culture Media & Sports to the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills. Lack of immediate action is costing jobs, growth and investment.??
The 2013 holiday report has also revealed the following key findings:
?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? This year due to the dismal weather, 15% of Britons have been waiting for the sun to come out before they booked their Staycation break.
?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Just over a fifth of adults (21%) have had to wait until May to book their summer break due to money constraints.
?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? A third (33%) of respondents stated that it is cheaper to holiday in the UK than abroad plus it is better value for money. The average foreign holiday cost quoted in the report was ?1,010.00.
?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Over a third of Britons (35%) believe it is important to holiday in the UK in order to preserve our heritage and support British tourism.
?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Over a quarter of Britons (27%) stated that a holiday is one of the few things that they refuse to cut back on
?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? One in ten (11%) of Britons have reported they have not been able to afford a holiday during the economic uncertainty.
?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 21% of Britons have created a UK bucket list.
?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? A third of Britons (33%) research and book their Staycation break online.
The report also revealed a new holiday trend for intergenerational family holidays as this year a third (32%) of Britons will use their Staycation break to bring together more than one generation of their family.

Christine Daniel is a minister and doctor (although, not, to our knowledge, a realtor, dentist, or vampire hunter) who just wanted to help the world beat cancer! She did this by going on Trinity Broadcast Network and selling a mixture of suntan oil and beef flavoring.
To people with cancer.
As a cure.
For cancer.
Man, she may have outgrifted the Crouches! (For the lord, of course.)
Now she is going to jail for 14 years, and having to give back $1.2 million (SADFACE!), just for murdering people! STOP INFRINGING CHRISTINE DANIEL?S RELIGIOUS FREEDOM TO KILL PEOPLE, NOBAMA!!!!
Tell us more about it, our much-missed colleagues at OC Weekly!
Besides cancer, Daniel claimed C-Extract cured multiple sclerosis, strokes, Alzheimer?s disease, Parkinson?s disease, diabetes and hepatitis, boasting a 60-80 percent success rate for the most advanced forms of cancer. Victims from around the country told Judge Timlin that Daniel instructed them to stop their chemotherapy and other traditional cancer treatments and pay her $5,000 instead for ?C-Extract.? One patient who paid $13,000 died a few months later.
Many reportedly said they trusted Daniel because she was a minister. She reportedly played on that faith, according to her jaw-dropping court testimony related by City News Service: ?In faith-based churches, there are a lot of people who won?t go to doctors. They know in their hearts that what they are saying is not correct. They know the truth, and the Lord?s going to deal with this.?
Well she seems great. Very Christian, we are sure!

Obama speaks in Baltimore, May 17, 2013. (Jacquelyn Martin/AP)
President Barack Obama took a break from the trifecta of controversies?IRS, Benghazi, Department of Justice?swirling around the White House on Sunday to deliver the commencement address at Morehouse College, the historically black, all-male institution in Atlanta.
"What I ask of you today is the same thing I ask of every graduating class I address," Obama told 500 graduates and an estimated 10,000 onlookers, most of them in ponchos, on the school's stormy, rain-soaked campus. "Use that power for something larger than yourself."
While the message may have been unremarkable, the occasion was historic: Obama became the first sitting president to address Morehouse, the alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose spirit was evoked throughout the speech.
"Many of you know what it?s like to be an outsider, to be marginalized, to feel the sting of discrimination," Obama said. "That?s an experience that so many other Americans share. Hispanic Americans know that feeling when someone asks where they come from or tells them to go back. Gay and lesbian Americans feel it when a stranger passes judgment on their parenting skills or the love they share. Muslim Americans feel it when they?re stared at with suspicion because of their faith. Any woman who knows the injustice of earning less pay for doing the same work?she sure feels it."
The president said that while it might be tempting for graduates to use their degrees for personal wealth, they should aim for more. "I know some of you came to Morehouse from communities where life was about keeping your head down and looking out for yourself," Obama said. "Maybe you feel like you escaped, and you can take your degree, get a fancy job and never look back. And don?t get me wrong?with the heavy weight of student loans, with doors open to you that your parents and grandparents could scarcely imagine, no one expects you to take a vow of poverty.
"It is not just the African-American community that needs you," Obama said. "The country needs you. The world needs you."
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, attendees arrived as early 3:30 a.m. to reserve a spot at the open-air ceremony.
The president said that growing up, he used to chalk up some of his own "bad choices" to being black.
"We know that too many young men in our community continue to make bad choices," Obama said. "Growing up, I made a few myself. And I have to confess, sometimes I wrote off my own failings as just another example of the world trying to keep a black man down. But one of the things you?ve learned over the last four years is that there?s no longer any room for excuses."
First-year Morehouse College president John Wilson introduced President Obama. Prior to taking the Morehouse job, Wilson ran the White House's historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) initiative.
After the ceremony, the president was scheduled to later attend a fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at the home of Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank.
It was Obama's second graduation speech in as many weeks. Last week, the president delivered the commencement address at Ohio State. His third and final speech of graduation season, at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., is slated for Friday.

Forex is trading in foreign markets; anyone can be a Forex trader. This article will give you a basic understanding of the foreign exchange market and how you earn income trading on forex.
Never base trading decisions on emotion; always use logic. Feelings of greed, excitement, or panic can lead to many foolish trading choices. Emotions are a part of any trade, but do not allow them to be your main motivator.
If you want success, do not let your emotions affect your trading. This will help to keep you from making weak or quick impulse decisions, which can lead to big losses. While your emotions will always impact your business, you can make an effort to stay as rational as possible.
Always discuss your opinions with other traders, but keep your own judgment as the final decision maker. Listen to others? opinions, but make your own decisions on your investments.
As you begin to make money, avoid making decisions that are based on overexcitement or greed. Such decisions can lead to losses. You should also avoid panic trading. Act based on your knowledge, not emotion, when trading.
You should pay attention to the larger time frames above the one-hour chart. Because of the ease of technology today, you can keep track of Forex easily by quarter hours. The downside of these rapid cycles is how much they fluctuate and reveal the influence of pure chance. Stick with longer cycles to avoid needless stress and false excitement.
Keep your emotions in check while trading. Do not seek vengeance or become greedy. It is extremely important to stay level headed whenever you are dealing with the Foreign Exchange market.
Create a plan and stay on course. Establishing goals, and deadlines for meeting those goals, is extremely important when you?re trading in forex. Keep in mind that the timetable you create should have room for error. If this is your first time trading, you will probably make mistakes. Determine the amount of time you can set aside for trading activities, and don?t forget to account for time needed for research.
Placing stop losses when trading is more of a science. When it comes to trading you will have to make compromises between your technical knowledge and how you gut feels about the situation. It takes years of practice and a handful of experience to master forex trading.
The Canadian dollar is a very safe investment. It can be tough to follow a foreign country?s developments, making trading foreign currencies hard. The Canadian dollar usually follows the same trend as the U. S. The Canadian dollar will often follow the same trends as U.S. currency, therefore making it a great choice for investing.
Pay close attention to tips or advice about Forex. Some information will work better for some traders than others; if you use the wrong methods, you could end up losing money. It is important for you to be able to recognize and react to changing technical signals.
A stop loss is an essential way to avoid losing too much money. A stop loss order operates like an insurance policy on your forex investment. If you don?t set a stop loss point, major fluctuations can happen without you being able to act on them and the result is a significant loss. Your capital can be protected by using stop loss orders.
When working with forex, you must never give up. All traders hit a run of bad luck at some point or another. Persistence is a quality a successful Foreign Exchange trader learns to develop. Even if there does not seem to be light at the end of the tunnel, keep walking and you will see it eventually.
Investigate the relative strength index in order to understand the market?s average gains and losses. It doesn?t quite display your investment, but does clue you in on the profitability of certain markets. If the track record of a market tells you that it does not usually turn a profit, you should probably reconsider buying into that market.
The forex market does not have a central location. Since it is so widespread, it cannot be completely ruined by things such as natural disasters. A crises will not force your to pull all of your money out of foreign exchange. A major event may affect the market, but will not necessarily affect your currency pair that you are working with.
Use stop loss orders to limit your losing trades. It?s common for traders to make the mistake of holding on with a losing position, in hopes that the market will improve.
Develop a plan. You will probably fail without a trading plan. If you follow your strategy and do not veer off course, you are less likely to allow your emotions to come into the trading process.
Don?t let your emotions get the best of you when trading. Impulse trading is going to yield bad results more often than not. Keep on the right track. Exercise self-restraint. You should not trade if you cannot clear your mind and stay focused.
You should be able to rationalize and explain why the action you want to make is beneficial to you. Talk to a broker and seek out other expert advice before making any decision that you don?t feel completely comfortable with.
You are not guaranteed to make money in forex. You won?t get rich just by using software, podcasts or automated systems. Instead, you have to give it your best, knowing that you will make mistakes and can learn from them.
It is important that you learn to cut your losses rather than aggressively try and gain them back. If you get too emotional, perhaps you need to take a short break from trading.
As revealed at the start of the article, Forex allows you to buy, trade and exchange money on a global scale. The tips laid out here can assist you to turn Forex into income you can make from your home, if you use self-control and patience.
Blue widgets is a complex topic, which is why you should take the time to research it some more. Luckily, the following article has some great information to help you get started. Now, all you have to do is use this article?s tips.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Gunmen killed a senior female politician from a reformist party in Pakistan on Saturday night, the latest violent incident in a bloody election campaign and one that set off a war of words between two major opposition parties.
Around 150 people were killed in the run-up to national elections held last week, which handed a landslide victory to opposition leader Nawaz Sharif and his PML-N party.
It marked the first time an elected government replaced another one in a nation that has been run by military leaders for more than half its history.
Results from a handful of constituencies are still awaited amid accusations of vote-rigging. The shooting came hours ahead of repolling in a key area beset by allegations of voting fraud.
It was not immediately clear who killed Zara Shahid Hussain, a senior member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. The PTI has promised to reduce endemic corruption in the nuclear-armed nation of 180 million people.
The PTI's leader, former international cricket star Imran Khan, immediately blamed the killing on the Muttahida Quami Movement. The MQM has a stranglehold on politics in Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi.
"Her death has sent shockwaves across the rank and file of the party," Khan said in a statement.
Police said that two gunmen shot Hussain dead outside her home in an upscale neighborhood of Karachi, he said.
"I hold (MQM leader) Altaf Hussain directly responsible for the murder as he openly threatened PTI workers and leaders through public broadcasts," he added in a tweet.
"I also hold the British government responsible as I had warned them about British citizen Altaf Hussain after his open threats."
MQM leader Hussain is wanted on murder charges in Pakistan and leads his party remotely from exile in England. His party is designated a terrorist organization by Canada, a charge it strongly denies.
In recent days he gave a speech which many Pakistanis felt was an incitement to attack political rivals. The British police have been flooded with complaints demanding an investigation.
The MQM leader insisted his words were taken out of context. MQM leaders held a press conference within hours of Hussain's death to disclaim responsibility and demand a retraction from Khan.
Khan's election campaign electrified many Pakistanis, pushing the PTI from a marginal party with no seats in the legislature to become Pakistan's third largest party.
National polls held a week ago gave the MQM 18 out of 19 national assembly seats in its power base in Karachi. Repolling is due to be held Sunday in the final constituency, thought to be a stronghold of PTI, after many polling stations failed to open on election day.
The steamy port city of Karachi is Pakistan's financial heart and home to 18 million people. It typically sees about a dozen murders a day, a deadly combination of political killings, attacks by Taliban and sectarian militant groups, and street crime.

Taking a page from the Grammys and the MTV VMAs and other awards show books that call for riskier fashion choices, the ladies of the Billboard Music Awards didn't disappoint Sunday night. Or maybe they did, depending on what disappoints you.
On the blue carpet before the show and onstage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the queens of pop, rap, country and whatever Ke$ha does pushed the limits. And then Madonna pushed a little further.
Check out the lineup below and be sure to vote for your ... favorite?
Madonna
The Material Girl busted out the garter belts and a fishnet mini skirt with matching fishnet glove things -- it's goth "Deadliest Catch."

You have to be getting to like her short hair by now, right? It works. How about her diamond-patterned jumpsuit?

Jennifer Lopez
Thigh-high red leather boots, a shiny red leotard thing with red feathery arms -- J.Lo is the sexiest Muppet we've ever seen.

Assessing Climate Science: On her web site, Judith Curry posted sections of a March essay by Lennart Bengtsson suggesting that the Climate Establishment, those supporting the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and its assertion that human (anthropogenic) carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are causing unprecedented and dangerous global warming (carbon based AGW), should take the current pause in warming to reassess the climate science. Global warming has not occurred as projected by the models. For example, Bengtsson states that about 25 years ago the MPI model in Hamburg projected the warming since the end of the 19th century should be about 1.25? C; but, it has been only about 0.75? C. Since the theory of greenhouse warming asserts that doubling of CO2 will cause a warming of about 1.1? C, the models used by the IPCC include an amplification of the warming by a positive feedback mechanism. With no atmospheric warming for a decade and no surface warming (according to the IPCC) for 17 years, there are significant problems with the models, which, according to Bengtsson, from 1979 to 2012 forecast an atmospheric warming about three times greater than observations.
As Curry points out, Bengtsson is part of the Climate Establishment, thus his criticisms should be carefully considered by the Establishment. However, thus far, his criticisms appear to be ignored. As Bengtsson states: ?The real genuine interest in climate and climate processes is fading away as the interest is confined to the concept of climate typical of the general public or rather I shall say the predominant or politically correct concept of climate.?
In her comments Curry expresses her great concern for the overemphasis on, what she calls, climate model taxonomy ? the analysis of the outputs of the models which infer catastrophic outcomes far in the future. Here the administrators of the government funding have been severely deficient. The emphasis should be on the validation of the models including rigorous testing of the assumptions. As Curry states, it is far too easy to get research, with no solid testing of assumptions, published in journals such as Nature and Science, while the hard research problems are ignored. Please see links under Seeking a Common Ground.

Public Enemies? P. Gosselin reports that the German Ministry of the Environment published a 123 page pamphlet on global warming/climate change. ?According to the UBA, all the climate doubt stems mainly from the USA. Beginning on page 100, the UBA lists the Americans responsible for ?spreading doubt and false information?, among them: ExxonMobil, Fred Singer, Sallie Baliunas and Willie Soon, Frederick Seitz, Joe Barton, Pat Michaels, John Christy, Ross McKitrick and the Heartland Institute. The UBA cites the Union of Concerned Scientists and a one-sided Die Zeit smear from November 2012 as its reliable sources for this information.? Draw your own conclusions. Please see link under Defending the Orthodoxy.

Another 97%: The Climate Establishment seems to be fascinated with the claim that 97% ? 98% of the scientists agree ? Previously, both EOS and the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences published surveys of highly questionable quality that stressed that ?97% ? 98% of scientists agree?? [TWTW Sep 1 & Sep 8, 2012] Now, Environmental Research Letters published a survey of the abstracts by a team headed by John Cook, who blogs on the misnamed web site Skeptical Science. The survey covered the years from 1991 to 2011 and searched on the topics ?global climate change? and ?global warming.? The survey found 11,944 abstracts, of which 66.4% expressed no position on carbon-based AGW, 32.6% endorsed carbon-based AGW, and 1% rejected AGW or were uncertain about the cause. The 32.6% immediately became ?97% of scientists agree ??
Based on separate reports by the Government Accountability Office and the Congressional Research Service, SEPP estimates that the US Federal government has spent about $140 to $150 Billion on global warming/climate change issues from FY 1993 to 2012. Little, if any, of this funding went directly to skeptics. It should be noted that the satellite observations of atmospheric temperatures are part of this funding. Further, it would be interesting to see how many of the 32.6% of the papers were based on analysis of the outcomes of IPCC models, which have never been verified and validated, thus are little more than sophisticated speculation. On their web sites, Anthony Watts and Jo Nova have devastating comments regarding the survey.
If anything, the survey demonstrates how much of climate science is of questionable quality. Many of the papers, such as those which analyze the long range results of the models, make the logical error of petitio principii ? they assume that which must be proven is true. Please see links under Communicating Better to the Public ? Make things up.

Cloudy Issue: The abstract of an article in Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics states: ?Recent measurements of the cosmic ray intensity show that a former decrease with time has been reversed. Thus, even if cosmic rays enhanced cloud production, there would be a small global cooling, not warming.? However, the statement appears to be exactly consistent with the solar-cosmic ray hypothesis and the current lack of warming.
The abstract further states: ??the results do not lead to the conclusion that cosmic rays affect atmospheric clouds significantly, at least if H2SO4 is the dominant source of aerosols in the atmosphere.? However, the effectiveness of aerosols in forming clouds is being challenged. Please see links under Commentary: Is the Sun Rising? and Seeking a Common Ground.

EPA: Until late last week, the Republicans on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works have held up the confirmation of Regina (Gina) McCarthy for Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. McCarthy is the EPA assistant administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation, which has issued numerous air quality regulations without revealing the scientific basis for the regulations. The Republicans have taken an (unusual?) principled, stance demanding transparency on EPA regulation making, for which they have been been roundly criticized by the administration and in the general press.
On April 10, they sent a letter outlining their five major concerns (copied from the web site on May 14 with the assessment of the response by the EPA).
1. That the EPA issue new guidance drafted by its Office of General Counsel that clearly outlines: a) standards and procedures to ensure that all official business is conducted solely on official government email accounts; and b) standards and procedures for responding fully, truthfully, and in a timely manner to FOIA requests and Congressional inquiries. EPA?s response is a step forward.
2. That all private email accounts of Regina McCarthy are exhaustively reviewed, and that all emails regarding official EPA business are produced unredacted to the committee. If no such emails exist, that an affidavit stating that fact by McCarthy be produced for the committee. In addition, we are asking for transparency on specific documents the committee has obtained in unredacted form. The EPA has been wholly unresponsive.
3. That underlying data used to promulgate Clean Air Act rules be made public so the public can independently examine cost/benefit and other issues. That the EPA release a full set of data files for the American Cancer Society Study; the Harvard Six Cities Study; HEI/Krewski et al. 2009; Laden et al. 2006; Lepeule 2012; and Jerrett 2009. The EPA has been wholly unresponsive.
4. That written assurances be given the committee that the EPA will conduct cost/benefit analyses as required under various executive orders and as required by the CAA, Section 321(a), specifically through issuance of new guidance mandating ?whole economy? modeling on major rules. The EPA has been wholly unresponsive.
5. That all petitions for rulemaking or the promulgation of guidance received by the Agency, including by the Office of the Administrator and/or by the Office of General Counsel, be tracked, listed, and made publicly available, including copies of the documents, via readily available links on the Agency?s website. This information is to be regularly updated. That all notices of intent to sue received by the Agency, including by the Office of the Administrator and/or by the Office of General Counsel be tracked, listed, and made publicly available, including copies of the documents, via readily available links on the EPA website. This information is to be regularly updated. The EPA has partially responded. [This relates to ?sue and settle? with no opportunity for those most affected to challenge.]

Green Jobs v. Black Gold? For years politicians in many countries have been promising prosperity and high paying green jobs from the development of renewable energy, such as solar and wind power. The green jobs are proving to be as illusionary as the reliability of wind. Largely unnoticed by Washington, for a decade deep underground hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling of dense shale for oil and natural gas has been creating prosperity and jobs in the regions in which it is occurring. These activities are regulated by the several states and there is no verified instance in which fracturing has resulted in contamination of well water.
Some in Washington are finally taking notice and the Department of Interior has announced proposed regulations for permitting these activities on Federal lands. It remains to be seen how severe the final regulations will be.
Senator Inhofe has an amusing take on the situation and the possibility of Iran building an atomic bomb with his proposed ?Iranian Oil Replacement Zones.? Impose a total embargo on the export of oil by Iran and designate Federal lands for the production of 1.25 million barrels of oil per day to offset current Iranian exports. Please see links under Energy Issues, Alternative Energy and Washington?s Control of Energy.

Snowpack: Governor of California Jerry Brown has blamed the wildfires in California on global warming, and the LA Times amplified the concern by reporting the snowpack in the Sierra Mountains is 17% of normal. Official reports in March put it at 67% of normal. However, to prepare for the summer, the critical measurement is how much water in the reservoirs, not how much is in the snowpack. Reports put the level of reservoirs at or above normal thanks to November ? December rains. In late February, the largest, Lake Shasta, was at 79%, or 107% of normal.
One of the big problems those who manage the water resources face every year is how much to draw down the reservoirs in the fall to prepare for the spring floods. Accurate weather prediction would be a boon for them. One would think journalists at the LA Times would know how they get their water. The same applies for much of the western US, where all the major rivers are dammed. Please see links under California Dreaming.

400 ppm: It appears that the reports last Friday putting the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere at 400 parts per million may have been premature. Of course, there were many alarmist reports stating it is the highest in human history, which is technically true. However, it was about 3000 ppm 65 million years ago and the ancestors of all current species of plants and animals survived. Please see links under The Magic 400?

Number of the Week ? 76%. Bj?rn Lomborg estimates that 76% of renewable energy is from biomass burning, and it accounts for about 10% of all energy use. ?About 60% of this is wood, twigs, and dung, used by almost three billion people who lack access to modern fuels ? and resulting in terrible air pollution and millions of deaths.? http://nipccreport.org/articles/2013/may/15may2013a4.html
In summary the conclusion by Wen et al. that ?human influence is detectable on extreme temperatures in China? appears to be based on model-driven analysis that does not represent important observed realities, that large-scale circulation changes have led to fewer rain/cloud days, and subsequently, to extreme warm temperatures. These large-scale circulation changes are governed by several parameters few, if any of which, include anthropogenic (CO2-induced) warming. As such, the conclusion that ?increasing extreme temperatures over China are linked primarily to anthropogenic warming? is not well substantiated.
