Investors See Bargains in Depressed Greek Real Estate - WORLD ...

Real estate, and especially commercial real estate, is beginning to play a strong role in the economic recovery of Greece, according to brokers, bankers and consultants in Athens and London.
?
One big reason is the coalition government led by conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras that came to power in June has impressed some investors. Samaras promised to do everything needed to keep bailout funds flowing, easing fears of bankruptcy and leaving the Euro zone.
?
Even German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who calls the shots on bailout programs for sick Euro zone members, has eased her former position on allowing Greece to default on its debt.? Other Euro zone members may be following Merkel's position.
?
Dimitris Manoussakis, head of the Athens office of real estate consultant Savills, recently told the media the Greek government's new stance in selling state assets, including real estate as a condition of its bailout over the next several months, may start to convince some investors they will be getting a fair price on property transactions.
?
Greek investors, especially those living abroad, are becoming interested again in commercial property like hotels and retail, with demand even coming from the US, South Africa and Australia. Six months ago, that same interest was lacking, according to global real estate analysts.
?
Those potential investors are eyeing bargain prices as their incentive to step back into the market. Those same investors, however, abandoned the country when its economy was faltering and took much of their cash with them.
?
Reuters reported Kostas Kazolides, a London-based investor who has been investing in and advising on property deals in Greece and Cyprus for 35 years, recently said "There are deals that (once) didn't make sense but do now as the outside world takes the government more seriously."
?
He added, "People are talking about going back in and buying. There are villas in Mykonos going at 30 percent of their value because sellers are feeling the pinch." A 30 percent fall in construction costs was another incentive.
?
Data from Lipper, a Thomson Reuters company that tracks the funds industry, shows the amount of money flowing out of Greek equity funds is slower in 2012 than previous years and turned positive in August.
?
The net outflow from funds investing in Greek equities during 2012 was 17 million euros at the end of August, out of a total asset base of 690 million euros, which indicates a slowdown in investors running for the exit from the 50 million euros of 2011 and 42 million euros lost in 2010, according to Reuters.

(AP) ? After four election wins, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is on track to completing at least 20 years in power, and supporters such as street bookseller Cristina Tovar say they're glad to have him in charge.

Tovar has signed up to receive new public housing, and the government has installed brightly painted kiosks for her and other vendors. Nearby, the city's streets are still lined with campaign posters emblazoned with the president's image.

In a region where military dictators ruled by force for decades, millions of Latin Americans such as Tovar are backing a new crop of leaders extending their rule and dominating power through the ballot box.

Already the Western Hemisphere's longest-serving president, Chavez has helped lead the charge of incumbents who have secured constitutional changes and stayed on for multiple terms, overturning provisions that had barred or limited re-election. Chavez won the right to indefinite re-election through a 2009 referendum and earlier this month was elected to another six-year term.

"He deserves to win as many times as the people elect him," Tovar said. "I adore my president."

Ecuador's leader, Rafael Correa, is widely expected to seek a third term in February, which could extend his rule to 10 years, while presidents in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Colombia have also won re-election since 2006.

Some critics are uneasy about the health of the democracies in which a single person can remain in office for a generation. Even Chavez's friend and ally, former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, publicly advised the Venezuelan leader last week that a fourth term ought to be enough.

Silva, who was hugely popular and served two terms before stepping down in 2010, said in an interview with the Argentine newspaper La Nacion that "Chavez should begin to prepare his succession." Silva said that in Brazil he forbade his political allies from seeking a constitutional amendment to give him a third term.

"If I had done it, I would have wanted a fourth term, and then a fifth," Silva said. "For democracy, alternation in power is a conquest of humanity, and that is why it should be maintained."

Increasingly, though, popular incumbents have appeared virtually unstoppable, despite controversy about their efforts to stay in power.

As countries have benefited from a decade of economic growth, many presidents have won the allegiance of the poor and the working class, which for some has translated into a kind of fanatic devotion often seen in the past century, when populist leaders such as Brazil's Getulio Vargas and Argentina's Gen. Juan Peron rode popular support to long years in presidential palaces.

Since 1985, 15 of 17 incumbent presidents in Latin America seeking re-election have won, said Javier Corrales, a political science professor at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Only two incumbents have fallen short: Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua in 1990 and Hipolito Mejia in the Dominican Republic in 2004, both amid economic troubles. In Ortega's case, he returned to power in 2007 and won re-election last year, extending his total potential time in office to 15 years. Nicaragua's Supreme Court in 2009 effectively removed term limits.

"It seems that in Latin America all you really need to know to predict an election is, well, is the incumbent running for office?" Corrales said.

Experts say that record speaks volumes about both the advantages incumbents traditionally enjoy and also the strong powers that Latin American presidents wield in often-fragile democracies.

"The fact is that these presidencies tend to be really powerful offices, much more powerful than the U.S. presidency is, relative to the other actors out there," said John Carey, a professor of government at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. "And the prospects for being able to self-perpetuate by abusing the authorities of the office are really big, in particular manipulating the courts, manipulating the media and manipulating budgets."

After Chavez beat rival Henrique Capriles this month by 11 percentage points, his narrowest margin ever, opposition leaders accepted defeat but also complained of Chavez's heavy spending on public housing and other social programs before the vote.

Some say that with Chavez entrenched for another six-year term, Venezuela runs the risk of further concentrating powers in the president, especially with his allies controlling the legislative branch. Voters in 2007 had narrowly defeated Chavez-backed constitutional changes that included abolishing presidential term limits, only to approve indefinite re-election in another referendum two years later.

"It's really depressing," said Gabriela Montero, a renowned Venezuelan pianist who lives in the Boston area. "I think having so much power and having so much money ... Chavez has been in a position of incredible advantage."

Montero composed a piece last year called "ExPatria," saying it grew from feelings of losing her homeland. Reflecting on the result of this month's election, Montero pointed to the words of 19th century independence hero Simon Bolivar, the namesake of Chavez's Bolivarian Revolution movement, who once warned that "nothing is so dangerous as to permit a citizen to remain in power a long time."

For his part, Chavez has also been invoking Bolivar while pledging a renewed push for oil-exporting Venezuela to become a more equitable, socialist society.

"Socialism equals democracy, democracy equals socialism ? the power of the people," Chavez said in a televised Cabinet meeting last week, saying he aims to create a "21st century socialist democracy."

The trend toward multi-term presidents in the past decade has been dominated by left-wing leaders but has also included conservative Alvaro Uribe in Colombia. He stepped down in 2010 after a court blocked a referendum on whether he could seek a third term.

Term limits have a long history in Latin America as a way to check presidential power, with many countries imposing strict limits after the fall of military or civilian dictators.

Peru became one of the first to loosen those limits in recent years under President Alberto Fujimori, who shut down Congress in 1992. His allies then drafted a constitution that allowed him to be re-elected twice ? before he fled into exile amid a corruption scandal. Peru went on to bar re-election to two consecutive terms.

Since 1995, seven Latin American presidents have followed suit and won the right to re-election through constitutional changes, said Ignazio De Ferrari, a doctoral student in political science at the London School of Economics. Several countries such as Mexico, Honduras and Paraguay still permit only a single term for presidents.

The latest fight over term limits is brewing in Bolivia as President Evo Morales gears up to run in 2014. Morales first won election in 2005 and then pushed for a new constitution in 2009 that allowed re-election. He now argues that the two-term limit began only with his 2009 win.

His opponents argue Morales is manipulating the rules, and the country's Constitutional Court has been called on to settle the dispute.

In many cases, Latin America's incumbent presidents have fared much better than incumbent parties that put forth a new candidate, giving leaders an incentive to loosen term limits.

As country after country follows suit, Corrales summed up his concerns in the subtitle of a recent research paper: "Can anyone stop the president?"

Apple rolls out new iPad and iPad Mini

by Associated Press

Poll:
Is Apple going overboard with releasing new products?

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Apple Inc. is refusing to stoop to the level of its rivals in the tablet market --it's pricing its new, smaller iPad well above the competition.

On Tuesday, the company revealed the iPad Mini, with a screen that's about two-thirds the size of the full-size model, and said it will cost $329 and up.

Apple starts taking orders for the new model on Friday Oct. 26, said marketing chief Phil Schiller at an event in San Jose, Calif. Wi-Fi-only models on Nov. 2. Later, the company will add models capable of accessing "LTE" wireless data networks.

The price fits into the Apple product lineup between the iPad 2 at $399 and the latest version of the iPod touch at $299. But company watchers had been expecting Apple to price the iPad Mini at $250 to $300 to counter the threat of less expensive tablets like Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire, which starts at $159.

Apple shares fell $14.83, or 2.3 percent, to $619.20 when the price was announced. Shares of Amazon.com Inc. were down 12 cents, or less than 0.1 percent, at $233.66 while the rest of the stock market was in retreat.

The iPad mini weighs 0.68 pounds, half as much as the full-size iPad, and is as thin as a pencil, Schiller said.

The screen resolution is 1024 by 768 pixels, the same as the iPad 2 and a quarter of the resolution of the third-generation iPad. Like the iPad and iPhone, it was two cameras, one on the front and one on the back.

"It's not just a shrunken-down iPad, it's an entirely new design," Schiller said.

Company watchers have been expecting the iPad Mini for a year, and most of the details, except the price, had leaked out. More surprisingly, Apple also said it's upgrading its full-size iPad tablet just six months after launching a new model, doubling the speed of the processor. Previously, the company has updated the iPad once a year.

The fourth-generation iPad will have a better camera and work on more "LTE" wireless data networks around the world. Apple is also replacing the 30-pin dock connector with the new, smaller "Lightning" connector introduced with the iPhone 5 a month ago.

The price of the new full-size model stays the same as the previous version, starting at $499 for a Wi-Fi-only version with 16 gigabytes of memory.

Apple has sold more than 100 million iPads since April 2010.

--

Apple is introducing a new 13-inch MacBook Pro laptop that has a "Retina" display, with four times the resolution of the previous model.

The new model follows a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display introduced this summer, and will start at $1,699. Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller said it will go on sale immediately.

The old MacBook Pro will still be sold, starting at $1,199.

The new model dispenses with an optical drive and a traditional hard drive. Instead, it uses solid-state "flash" memory. This makes it 20 percent thinner and at 3.75 pounds, nearly a pound lighter than the previous model.

Apple revealed the new computer at an event in San Jose, Calif., where it also revealed a smaller iPad and updated the full-sized one.

Emily Jordan, freshman, is excited about this new concentration on the management degree. ?I believe the benefits for being the ?guinea pigs? for the new arts and entertainment management concentration definitely overshadows the risks. I wanted to be one of the first to try it out right when I heard about it. When I spoke to advisor at orientation I became fully convinced that this was the best major for me,? said Jordon.

All these new enhancements being made by the Lubin school are sure to put students even more ahead of the curve and prepare them for a competitive job market.

California Union Members Demand Transparency from Union Bosses

Members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) have launched a protest against their own union in California over waste and corruption. They rallied outside SEIU headquarters last week and plan to be in Sacramento on Wednesday.

The protestors are calling for transparency, accountability, and audits of the 2 million member labor union. The group?s website is urging members to hold their representatives accountable: ?It is our members that see the waste every day; it is our members that can call it out to the union representatives in their area.?

At the rally last week, SEIU officials asked the gathering protesters, ?How much are they paying you?? The protestors replied that they were participating on their own time.

SEIU reacted to the protest outside its offices by closing the doors and videotaping the dissenting members, according to the protesters. The group?s website describes the purpose of videotaping dissenting members as an effort to identify members to add to a ?blacklist.?

Members critical of the SEIU may have good reason to suspect a blacklist, as they have allegedly faced exclusion from SEIU activities before. In a lawsuit filed against the SEIU, Mariam Noujaim, a member and DMV worker, claims that after she reported suspicious votes being counted at an SEIU election she had observed, she was subsequently pushed out of the room and the door behind her locked. This was a violation of Noujaim?s right to participate in union activities under the Dills Act in California, the lawsuit claims.

Noujaim writes: ?In 2010 we were furloughed while our SEIU Union Members, who we pay their salaries, were getting raises, splurging with our dues, and misusing our money for their own selfish interest.? For more than two years, the group has been fighting in court for access to SEIU?s books and financial records ? access they argue is protected by the California Corporation Code.

The group is also encouraging members of other labor organizations to demand access to their union?s financial records and determine exactly where their dues are being spent. They will hold another rally in Sacramento on Wednesday. These union members feel their union officers hardly represent them?another reason the law should let workers should choose their representatives.

Not only will those automatic emails keep her engaged throughout her search process, they?ll also help you keep tabs on what she?s looking at.? In addition, if you?re showing her listings and realize that what she?s looking for has changed, you can just update her search so she gets more fitting results.? But, it?s all pretty abstract until you actually test these tools out.? So, when you have ten minutes, I urge you to follow the below steps so that you?re an effective advocate of your own website?s tools.

Testing the water:

  • First, save a search and a favorite for yourself!? Just go to your website, register or log in using the register tools and perform a search.? Next, click on the ?save search? button at the very top.? Note: if you have more than 200 search results, you?ll need to narrow your search further to save it.
  • Then, check your email.? You?ll have a confirmation email from the site and will start getting daily updates about your property search.? While you?re always going to be up on the market as a REALTOR, this is even a tool that you can use to stay up on trends and new listings.
  • While you?re trying out your own tools, go back to the site and choose a few favorite properties.? Save those listings as favorites so you can refer back to them later.? While less applicable for you as a REALTOR, saving favorites for your clients is a great idea, since it?s essentially a bookmarked gallery of favorite properties, so it?s a good idea to know how the tool works.
  • Now that you have searches and favorites saved, you can always log in and edit any of your search details.

Becoming your clients? search guide

Once you?ve tried out the tools on your end, you should have some familiarity with how the system works.? Now it?s time to translate those benefits to your clients.? We?ve always encouraged you to sign your buyers up on the front end of your website, but we?ve recently updated the admin system to allow you to do everything in the back end.? So, you now have a few ways to sign up a user on your site.

From the front end:

If you?re in a meeting with a client, bring up your website,?click on the ?join now? button?anywhere on your site and enter her email address, name and desired password.? She?ll automatically get a confirmation email in her inbox with all of her account information at this point so she can return to the site later.? You?ll now be logged in as her on the site.?Note:?for office sites, just remember to assign the correct agent (you!) to a client as you set her up with an account.

?

?

Then, start searching with your client on the site.? Is she looking for a 3 bedroom Cape in a specific neighborhood?? Once you?ve landed on the right search for your client, just hit the??save search? button.? Your client will now get?daily updates?from the site?(and completely?branded to you) when new listings hit the market and when listings are updated.

As you narrow down her search to some key properties, make sure to click on the??save favorite? button?on the listing page.? As an alternative, you can?share listings?to her Facebook, twitter, pinterest or google plus accounts, as well as through good old fashioned email.? Any of these options will help to remind your client that you know what she?s looking for and are there to help.

From your admin interface:
Until recently, you could only manage users? registration, searches and favorites through the above steps.? But, we?ve updated admin.unionstmedia.com to allow you to update everything about your user accounts from the ?clients? page.

?

So, you can add a client

Then, you can add or edit the client?s searches

And, you can add favorites by MLS number

This isn?t just useful for a user you?ve signed up yourself.? You can now add searches and favorites for any of the leads that have come in to your website.

The more you know about what your clients are seeing, the better you?ll be able to explain your services and differentiate yourself from your competitors.? Some of your clients may not be interested in these tools, but no matter what, you can also use these tools to keep track of what your buyers are looking for.

If you have questions about any of these steps, or are looking for ways to improve your lead conversion and engagement, especially with the launch of our Compass tools, just give me or Megan a ring.

Are We a Public Relations Agency?

We still categorize ourselves as a PR agency, but that?s only because the vast majority of prospects and RFPs use the term.

Once we engage with clients, our actions reflect a ?communications consultancy.?

Is there a difference?

Public Relations Society of American (PRSA) defines PR as:

?Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.?

I can live with a definition that umbrellas what we do.

But here?s the rub.

Most people still perceive PR with old-school definitions in which ?media relations? and ?public relations? are used interchangeably.

Which brings me back to ?communications consultancy? since our thinking and ultimately our campaigns blend digital, storytelling, SEO, owned media, social, thought leadership and content marketing with traditional PR.

Our work can even overlap into paid media, like a current project in which we?re negotiating sponsored content with grassroots bloggers.

Holistic Approach to Communications

Here?s what we consider the bottom line ?

It doesn?t matter whether you sell tablets, treadmills or technology for data centers, prospective customers conduct some form of due diligence online. With this in mind, we need to bring together the different components (and associated expertise) to help clients reach those folks.

It?s somewhat ironic that the less communications infrastructure an organization has, the more likely they?ll move toward an integrated approach to communications.

In large companies with stratified functions, the webmaster buys from a web design company, the social media head buys from a digital agency, the content czar buys from a copywriting shop, and the PR lead buys from a PR company.

Money ? not to mention Fiefdomville ? makes it nearly impossible for these companies to execute blended campaigns.

The opportunity to really move the needle when it comes to digital presence tends to lie with smaller organizations where the PR head essentially serves as the first lieutenant to the CMO or VP of marketing (or there is no senior PR person).

So are we a PR agency or a communications consultancy?

I suppose it depends on the assignment (though the anchor text above reveals a tilt).

Increased flavonoid intake reduced risk for aggressive prostate cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? A high total intake of flavonoids, a group of compounds found in plants, was inversely associated with the risk for highly aggressive prostate cancer, according to data presented at the 11th Annual AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, held in Anaheim, Calif. Oct. 16-19, 2012.

"Incorporating more plant-based foods and beverages, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs and tea, into the diet may offer some protection against aggressive prostate cancer," said Susan E. Steck, Ph.D., M.P.H, R.D., associate professor at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. "Filling your plate with flavonoid-rich foods is one behavior that can be changed to have a beneficial impact on health."

Prior preclinical studies have shown that flavonoids have beneficial effects against prostate cancer, but few studies have examined the effect of flavonoids on prostate cancer in humans.

Steck and her colleagues used data from 920 African-American men and 977 European-American men in the North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project who were newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. Participants completed a self-reported dietary history questionnaire to assess flavonoid intake, which was measured using the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 2011 Database for the Flavonoid Content of Selected Foods.

Men with the highest total intake of flavonoids had a 25 percent lower risk for aggressive prostate cancer compared with those men with the lowest flavonoid intake.

"We found that higher total flavonoid intake was associated with reduced odds for aggressive prostate cancer in both African-American and European-American men, but no individual subclass of flavonoids appeared to be protective independently, suggesting that it is important to consume a variety of plant-based foods in the diet, rather than to focus on one specific type of flavonoid or flavonoid-rich food," Steck said.

In addition, the risk for aggressive prostate cancer was even lower in those men younger than 65 and in current smokers with the highest levels of flavonoid intake. Dietary questionnaire results revealed that citrus fruits and juices, such as oranges and grapefruits, tea, grapes, strawberries, onions and cooked greens were the top contributors to total flavonoid intake among the participants.

"The results support public health recommendations and guidelines from organizations such as the American Institute for Cancer Research to consume a more plant-based diet," Steck said. "In particular, consuming more flavonoid-rich foods may be beneficial for those people who are at increased risk for cancer, such as smokers."

Source Exploration Intersects High-Grade Gold, Silver and Copper ...

Source Exploration (TSXV:SOP) intersected high-grade mineralization along-strike from that previously discovered in hole LM-11-SC-45, within the larger halo of copper-gold mineralization on step-out drilling at the Santa Cruz target at the Las Minas project in Mexico.

As quoted in the press release:

Step-out drilling has returned significant gold values as well as some of the highest grade silver and copper intercepts recorded to date. The higher grade mineralization appears to be closely associated with skarn-type alteration with high magnetite content ranging up to 90% by volume. A detailed magnetic geophysical survey has been initiated in an effort to better define future drill targets.

Source Exploration President and CEO Brian Robertson said:

These high-grade intercepts in the initial step-out drilling program are important because they have confirmed the continuity of mineralization both along strike and down dip. The results are particularly encouraging because of the presence of a high magnetite content commonly associated with the mineralization will serve as a marker for identifying areas of potential high-grade mineralization on the property. The ground magnetic survey is intended to identify extensions to the high-grade zone as well as other potential high-grade zones on the property. The exploration of these high priority targets will be the focus of our aggressive drilling program.

Bus service for qubits: Spin-orbit qubits are right at home in electrical circuits

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Qubit-based computing exploiting spooky quantum effects like entanglement and superposition will speed up factoring and searching calculations far above what can be done with mere zero-or-one bits. To domesticate quantum weirdness, however, to make it a fit companion for mass-market electronic technology, many tricky bi-lateral and multi-lateral arrangements -- among photons, electrons, circuits, cavities, etc. -- need to be negotiated.

A new milestone in this forward march: a Princeton-Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) collaboration announces the successful excitation of a spin qubit using a resonant cavity. The circuit, via the cavity, senses the presence of the qubit as if it were a bit of capacitance. This result, published October 17 in the journal Nature, points toward the eventual movement of quantum information over "bus" conduits much as digital information moves over buses in conventional computers.

Qubit Catalog

A qubit is an isolated system -- a sort of toggle -- which is maintained simultaneously in a mixture of two quantum states. Qubits come in many forms, such as photons in either of two polarization states, or atoms oriented in either of two states, or superconducting circuits excited in either of two ways.

One promising qubit platform is the quantum dot, a tiny speck of semiconducting material in which the number of electrons allowed in or out can be severely controlled by nearby electrodes. In a charge qubit the dot can co-exist in states where one or zero electrons are in the dot. In a spin qubit, two electrons (sitting in two neighboring dots), acting like a molecule, possess a composite spin which can be up or down.

Quantum dots are easy to fabricate using established semiconductor technology. This gives them an advantage over many other qubit modes, especially if you want to build an integrated qubit chip with many qubits in proximity. One drawback is that qubits in a dot are harder to protect against outside interference, which can ruin the delicate quantum processing of information. An example of this unwanted decoherence is the magnetic interaction of the electron "molecule" with the nuclei of the very atoms that make up the dot.

Another challenge is to control or excite the qubit in the first place. That is, the qubit must be carefully incited into its two-states-at-once condition, the technical name for which is Rabi oscillation. The Princeton-JQI work artfully addresses all these issues.

Circuit QED

Indeed, the present work is another chapter in the progress of knowledge about electromagnetic force. In the 19th century James Clerk Maxwell set forth the study of electrodynamics in its classic form. In the early and mid 20th century a quantum version of electrodynamics (QED) was established which also, incidentally, accommodated the revolutionary idea of antimatter and of the creation and destruction of elementary particles.

More recently QED has been extended to the behavior of electromagnetic waves within metal circuits and resonant cavities. This cavity-QED or circuit-QED (cQED), provides a handy protocol for facilitating a traffic between qubits and circuits: excitations, entanglement, input and readout, teleportation (movement of quantum information), computational logic, and protection against decoherence.

Forty years ago this effort to marry coherent quantum effects with electronics was referred to as quantum electronics. The name used nowadays has shifted to quantum optics. "With the advent of the laser, the focus moved into the optical domain," says Jacob Taylor, a JQI fellow and NIST physicist. "It is only in the past few years that the microwave domain -- where electronics really function -- has come into its own, returning quantum optics to its roots in electrical circuits."

Cavities are essential for the transportation of quantum information. That's because speed translates into distance. Qubits are ephemeral; the quantum information they encode can dissipate quickly (over a time frame of nanoseconds to seconds) and all processing has to be done well before then. If, moreover, the information has to be moved, it should be done as quickly as possible. Nothing goes faster than light, so transporting quantum information (at least for moving it from one place to another within a computer), or encoding the information, or entangling several qubits should be done as quickly as possible. In this way information or processing in more distant nodes can take place.

Spin-Orbit Coupling

The JQI part of this spin-qubit collaboration, Jacob Taylor, earlier this year participated in research that established a method for using a resonant cavity to excite a qubit consisting of an ion held simultaneously in two spin states. The problem there was a mismatch between the frequency at which the circuit operated and the characteristic frequency of the ion oscillating back and forth between electrodes. The solution was to have the circuit and ion speak to each other through the intermediary of an acoustic device.

The corresponding obstacle in the JQI-Princeton experiment is that the circuit (in effect a microwave photon reflecting back and forth in a resonant cavity) exerts only a weak magnetic effect upon the electron doublet in the quantum dot. The solution: have the cavity influence the physical movement of the electrons in the dot -- a more robust form of interaction (electrical in nature) -- rather than the interact with the electrons' spin (magnetic force).

Next this excitation is applied to the spin of the electron doublet (the aspect of the doublet which actually constitutes the quantum information) via a force called spin-orbit coupling. In this type of interaction the physical circulation of the electrons in the dot (the "orbit" part) tangles magnetically with the spins of the nuclei (the "spin" part of the interaction) in the atoms composing the dot itself.

It turns out this spin-orbit coupling is much stronger in indium-arsenide than in the typical quantum dot material of gallium-arsenide. This it was that material science was an important ingredient in this work, in addition to contributions from the physics and electrical engineering departments at Princeton.

To recap: an electrical circuit excites the dot electrically but the effect is passed along magnetically to the qubit in the dot when the electrons in the dot move past and provoke an interaction with the nuclei in the InAs atoms. Thus these qubits deserve to be called the first spin-orbit qubits in a quantum dot.

The influence works both ways. Much as the presence of a diver on the end of a diving board alters the resonant frequency of the board, so the presence of the spin qubit alters the resonant frequency of the cavity, and so its presence can be senses. Conversely, the alteration, effected by the spin-orbit interaction, can be used to excite the qubit, at rates of a million per second or more.

Previously a quantum-dot-based charge qubit was excited by a cavity. So why was it important to make a quantum-dot qubit based on spin? "The spins couple weakly to the electrical field, making them much harder to couple to than a charge," said Taylor. "However, it is exactly this property which also makes them much better qubits since it is precisely undesired coupling to other systems, which destroys quantum effects. With a spin-based qubit, this is greatly suppressed."

DNP NuForce launches Bluetooth 40 bookshelf speakers, promises to please audiophiles

NuForce has just launched the NuForce S3-BT, a line of high-quality bookshelf speakers that tout Bluetooth 4.0 as one of its main selling points. Most Bluetooth speakers tend to pale in comparison to their analog counterparts, but NuForce is confident its apt-x and AAC codecs will provide CD-quality audio even to the most discerning audiophile. If you're unconvinced, NuForce has also included a set of analog inputs plus the company's own Air DAC wireless system for slightly higher quality audio streaming. The powered speakers have a 3.5-inch bass driver and a 1-inch tweeter each, and the woofer touts a proprietary anti-resonance cone. If you care about looks, the speakers are wrapped in either soft white or black leatherette. They aren't cheap -- a pair will cost you $300 -- but for attractive high-fidelity speakers that won't contribute to your home's existing nest of wires, it may well be worth it

FACT CHECK: Stumbles in latest presidential debate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In the rough-and-tumble of a town hall-style presidential debate, the facts took something of a beating Tuesday night.

Mitt Romney wrongly claimed that it took 14 days for President Barack Obama to brand the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Libya a terrorist act. Obama yet again claimed that ending the Afghanistan and Iraq wars makes money available to "rebuild America," even though it doesn't.

A look at some of their claims:

OBAMA: The day after last month's attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, "I stood in the Rose Garden and I told the American people and the world that we are going to find out exactly what happened. That this was an act of terror and I also said that we're going to hunt down those who committed this crime."

ROMNEY: "I want to make sure we get that for the record, because it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror."

OBAMA: "Get the transcript."

THE FACTS: Obama is correct in saying that he referred to Benghazi as an act of terrorism on Sept. 12, the day after the attack. From the Rose Garden, he said: "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. ... We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act."

But others in his administration repeated for several days its belief that the violence stemmed from protests over an American-made video ridiculing Islam. It took almost a month before officials acknowledged that those protests never occurred. And Romney is right in arguing that the administration has yet to explain why it took so long for that correction to be made or how it came to believe that the attack evolved from an angry demonstration.

___

OBAMA: "Let's take the money that we've been spending on war over the last decade to rebuild America, roads, bridges, schools. We do those things, not only is your future going to be bright, but America's future is going to be bright as well."

THE FACTS: What Obama didn't mention is that much of the money that has been paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was borrowed. In fact, the government borrows nearly 40 cents for every dollar it spends. Thus using money that had been earmarked for wars to build schools and infrastructure would involve even more borrowing, adding to the federal deficit.

___

ROMNEY: "As a matter of fact, oil production is down 14 percent this year on federal land, and gas production was down 9 percent. Why? Because the president cut in half the number of licenses and permits for drilling on federal lands and in federal waters."

OBAMA: "Very little of what Governor Romney just said is true. We've opened up public lands. We're actually drilling more on public lands than in the previous administration and my ? the previous president was an oilman."

THE FACTS: Both statements ring true, as far as they go. Obama more correctly describes the bigger picture.

According to an Energy Department study published in the spring, sales of oil from federal areas fell 14 percent between 2010 and 2011 and sales of natural gas production fell 9 percent, supporting Romney's point. The lower oil production was a result mainly of a moratorium on offshore drilling imposed by the Obama administration after the April 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

According to the same report, though, oil production from federal areas is up 13 percent since Obama took office despite last year's dip, and analysts say Gulf oil production is expected to soon exceed its pre-spill levels.

Natural gas production from federal areas has been declining for years because drillers have found vast reserves of natural gas in formations under several states that are cheaper to access than most federally controlled areas.

___

OBAMA: "For young people who've come here, brought here often times by their parents, have gone to school here, pledged allegiance to the flag, think of this as their country and understand themselves as Americans in every way except having papers, we should make sure we give them a pathway to citizenship. And that's what I've done administratively."

THE FACTS: His administrative actions do not provide a pathway to citizenship. The administration is allowing as many as 1.7 million young illegal immigrants to apply to avoid deportation for up to two years and get a work permit. And the government has begun a policy of prosecutorial discretion under which illegal immigrants with long-standing ties to the U.S. and no criminal history are generally not arrested and deported by immigration authorities. But these steps do not extend legal status or a process resulting in citizenship.

___

ROMNEY: "I know he keeps saying, 'You want to take Detroit bankrupt.' Well, the president took Detroit bankrupt. You took General Motors bankrupt. You took Chrysler bankrupt. So when you say that I wanted to take the auto industry bankrupt, you actually did. And I think it's important to know that that was a process that was necessary to get those companies back on their feet, so they could start hiring more people. That was precisely what I recommended and ultimately what happened."

THE FACTS: What Romney recommended did not happen, and his proposed path probably would have forced General Motors and Chrysler out of business. He opposed using government money to bail out the automakers, instead favoring privately financed bankruptcy restructuring. But the automakers were bleeding cash and were poor credit risks. The banking system was in crisis. So private loans weren't available. Without government aid, both companies probably would have gone under and their assets sold in pieces.

___

OBAMA: "And what I want to do is build on the 5 million jobs that we've created over the last 30 months in the private sector alone."

THE FACTS: As he has done before, Obama is cherry-picking his numbers to make them sound better than they really are. He ignores the fact that public-sector job losses have dragged down overall job creation. Also, he chooses just to mention the past 30 months. That ignores job losses during his presidency up until that point. According to the Labor Department, about 4.5 million total jobs have been created over the past 30 months. But some 4.3 million jobs were lost during the earlier months of his administration. At this point, Obama is a net job creator, but only marginally.

___

ROMNEY: "The proof of whether a strategy is working or not is what the price is that you're paying at the pump. If you're paying less than you paid a year or two ago, why, then, the strategy is working. But you're paying more. When the president took office, the price of gasoline here in Nassau County was about $1.86 a gallon. Now, it's $4.00 a gallon. The price of electricity is up. If the president's energy policies are working, you're going to see the cost of energy come down."

THE FACTS: Presidents have almost no effect on energy prices; most are set on financial exchanges around the world. When Obama took office, the world was in the grip of a financial crisis and crude prices ? and gasoline prices along with them ? had plummeted because world demand had collapsed. Crude oil prices have since risen even as U.S. oil production has soared in recent years because global demand is reaching new heights as the developing economies of Asia use more oil.

Other energy prices have fallen during Obama's term. Electricity prices, when adjusted for inflation, are down, and homeowners are finding it much cheaper to heat their homes with natural gas. That's because natural gas production has surged, reducing prices both for homeowners and for utilities that burn gas to generate electricity.

OBAMA: "What I've also said is, for (those earning) above $250,000, we can go back to the tax rates we had when Bill Clinton was president."

THE FACTS: Not exactly. The Bush tax cuts set the top income rate at 35 percent. Under Obama's proposal to raise taxes on households earning more than $250,000, the president would return the top rate to the 39.6 percent set during the Clinton administration. But he neglected to mention that his health care law includes a new 0.9 percent Medicare surcharge on households earning over that amount ? and that tax would be retained. The health care law also imposes a 3.8 percent tax on investment income for high earners. So tax rates would be higher for the wealthiest Americans than they were under Clinton.

___

ROMNEY: "I'm going to bring rates down across the board for everybody, but I'm going to limit deductions and exemptions and credits, particularly for people at the high end, because I am not going to have people at the high end pay less than they're paying now."

THE FACTS: Romney is proposing to cut all income tax rates by 20 percent, eliminate the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax, maintain and expand tax breaks for investment income, and do it all without adding to the deficit or shifting the tax burden from the wealthy to the middle class. He says he would pay for the tax cuts by reducing or eliminating tax deductions, exemptions and credits, but he can't achieve all of his goals it under the budget rules presidents must follow.

The Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group, says in a study that the tax cuts proposed by Romney would reduce federal tax revenues by about $5 trillion over 10 years. The study concludes that there aren't enough tax breaks for the wealthy to make up the lost revenue, so the proposal would either add to the deficit or shift more of the tax burden on to the middle class.

Romney's campaign cites studies by conservative academics and think tanks that say Romney's plan will spur economic growth, generating enough additional money to pay for the tax cuts without adding to the deficit or shifting the tax burden to the middle class. But Congress doesn't recognize those kinds of economic projections when it estimates the budget impact of tax proposals.

___

ROMNEY: "A recent study has shown that people in the middle class will see $4,000 a year in higher taxes as a result of the spending and borrowing of this administration."

THE FACTS: Romney's claim is based on an analysis by the conservative American Enterprise Institute that examines the amount of debt that has accumulated on Obama's watch and in a potential second term and computes how much it would cost to finance that debt through tax increases. Annual deficits under Obama have exceeded $1 trillion for each year of his term.

However, Obama is not responsible for all of the deficits that have occurred on his watch. Most of the federal budget ? like Medicare, food stamps, Medicaid and Social Security ? runs on autopilot, and no one in a leadership position in Washington has proposed deep cuts in those programs. And politicians in both parties voted two years ago the renew Bush-era tax cuts that have contributed to the deficit. Even under the strict spending cuts proposed by Romney, the debt would continue to rise, just not as fast.
