Kim Witman: Into the Mouth of the Wolf

Your mission, should you decide to accept it:

Memorize a 2,000-word speech, some of it monologue and some of it dialogue.

Deliver most of it according to someone else's requirements of speed and inflection, some of which change on the fly.

Perform it while moving around a large area on cue -- dancing, climbing, sitting, standing, carrying, eating -- and wearing someone else's clothes.

Do it all in a language other than your native one.

And if that weren't enough, switch back and forth to a different 2,000-word script, one whose dialogue is intertwined with the first speech.

Who would do this?

The two gentlemen who have shown up on our doorstep to sing both the title character in Don Giovanni and his employee Leporello, that's who. Ryan Kuster and Craig Irvin are talented, fierce, hard-working, smart, nerdy and up for a challenge. They will alternate between the two roles throughout rehearsals, and each of them will sing each role twice in performance.

There will be a special kind of combustion that results from this intense simultaneous investigation of the cocky Giovanni and his practical sidekick. Will there be times in the next few weeks (opening night: June 29) at which we think we've lost our minds? Probably. Will there be moments in rehearsal (and in performance?) when the two characters blend so successfully that lines are momentarily dropped or stepped upon? Possibly, thanks to the crazy magic of live theatre. Will these two guys, their colleagues, and the audience will be the richer for it? Undoubtedly.

My life is so bound up with live theatre that I too often forget how utterly wonderful it is. So much of what we do in the rest of our lives is spit-polished and ground down to a place that is predictable and safe. The act of performing music, theatre or dance is anything but random, as it requires hours, years, decades of polishing a craft and internalizing skills. But when the rubber meets the road, it's just you and your wits alone onstage, delivering whatever you've got in real time.

On cue.

In costume.

On the move.

In Italian.

And switching from powerful Don Juan to scrappy Leporello at the drop of a hat.

In bocca al lupo, indeed!

(AP) ? The son of Malcolm X's biographer is asking Syracuse University to hand over a letter in which the slain activist writes about his shifting views on race relations, claiming his family is the rightful owner.

Malcolm X wrote to Alex Haley, his collaborator for "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," from Saudi Arabia in April 1964, about ten months before he was gunned down at a New York City hotel ballroom. The publisher of the autobiography later gave the letter to Syracuse University as part of a larger cache of papers to be used by researchers.

But Haley's son, William Haley, said the publisher never had legal title to the letter and could not give it away. His lawyer said Tuesday he plans to make a legal demand this week for the letter, which he believes is worth at least $650,000.

"The history is important for us as a family, the legacy," William Haley said. Haley said he was acting on behalf of himself and his two sisters. Haley said it's possible the family would decide to sell the letter, but that would be a group decision.

Alex Haley died in 1992.

"So much of African-American history gets lost and is sometimes not in the place where we prefer it to be," Haley said.

Malcolm X's letter, written after a pilgrimage to Mecca, addresses the recent time he spent with Muslims "whose skin was the whitest of white."

"In fact, what I have seen and experienced on this pilgrimage has forced me to 're arrange' much of my thought patterns, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions," he wrote.

The letter was sent to publisher Grove Press for inclusion in the autobiography, which was first published in 1965. Grove included the letter in files it gave to Syracuse University in 1969.

Sean M. Quimby, senior director of the university's Special Collections Research Center, said it has documentation from Grove that shows Syracuse owns the transferred archive. He said the school's ownership had never been challenged before in 43 years and he has not seen any evidence that the letter was lent, instead of given, to Grove.

"Our library and our special collections are publicly available to anyone, and there is a greater good served," Quimby added.

Haley's attorney, Gregory J. Reed of Detroit, said Haley passed along the letter to Grove only so it could be included in the autobiography and that Grove never had legal title.

Haley said he is acting now because he only found out about details of the letter recently after talking to Reed, who collects Malcolm X material.

Dan Hardy?s KO, Glover Teixeira?s submission and Jamie Varner?s upset highlight UFC 146 undercard

UFC 146's main card is about heavyweights, but the smaller weights made their mark on the preliminary card in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Jamie Varner scored an early upset with a TKO of previously unbeaten Edson Barboza. Taking the fight on short notice, Varner fought in the UFC for the first time since 2007. He gave Barboza trouble early with a takedown. Later in the first round, he pressured him against the fence, and peppered him with punches until Barboza fell to the ground. The bout was stopped at 3:23 in the first round.

"I can't believe it's me. It's so surreal. I just knocked out Edson Barboza, who was this monster in my mind," Varner said after the fight.

Dan Hardy broke his losing streak impressively. After losing four straight bouts, Hardy knocked Duane Ludwig out with a nasty left hook and followed with three elbows to end the fight at 3:51 in the first round.

"It felt great out there. You can put all the work in and if it goes wrong for 15 minutes then none of it matters. I've had a bad run. I took some time off and then I changed everything - new team, new training. It feels great. When you connect with the right shot you know its over. I put my arms up in celebration a little prematurely but when he looked back up I wasn't going to let it slip away so I went in and got the finish," Hardy said after the bout.

C.B. Dollaway used takedowns and ground control to get a unanimous decision win over Jason "Mayhem" Miller, 29-28, 30-26, 29-28. Miller had strong stand-up early but couldn't keep Dollaway's takedowns at bay. This is Miller's second loss in a row.

Diego Brandao and Darren Elkins fought a bruising, bloody fight to end the preliminary card with a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 decision win for Elkins.? In the grappling-filled bout, Brandao was strong in the first round, but the momentum swung in Elkins' favor in the second round. With a bloody ear, Elkins controlled the final round.

Glover Teixeira had plenty of pre-fight hype going into the UFC 146 prelims, and he lived up to it with a dismantling of Kyle Kingsbury. He used nasty ground and pound to beat up Kingsbury before finishing him with an arm-triangle choke at 1:53 in the first round.

"I'm really happy a debut in the UFC feels like my debut in MMA. It was that exciting to me. I'm just so happy to be here and after Dana's speech last night I just went out there and decided to go for it. I wanted him to remember my fight, and me," Teixeira said.

Paul Sass got in on the submission game with a slick armbar/triangle choke combination over Jacob Volkmann in the first round. Former WEC champ Mike Brown returned to vintage form with a unanimous decision over Daniel Pineda.

Facebook options debut a wild card for volatility

(Reuters) - Investors can hope the debut of options on Facebook Inc goes more smoothly than the long-awaited debut of the social networking service's stock on May 18.

While the stock's puts and calls are expected to be popular, the big wild card is volatility and ultimately, the options price.

Traders will get a fresh start on options on the Internet giant when the contracts are offered on U.S. options exchanges on May 29. BATS Options exchange, a division of BATS Global Markets, will list the options on May 30, following its standard practice of listing new options a day later than the other exchanges.

Plenty of uncertainty surrounds the stock, which debuted to much fanfare at $38 and immediately ran into problems.

Facebook's first day of trading was marred by technological glitches, and the company faces criticism that it sold too many shares, overwhelming demand. A week later, the stock was at $31.47, down 17.2 percent.

Options volume is expected to be robust. "It's a cocktail party stock and probably will attract a lot of participation from retail traders," said Steve Place, a founder of options analytics firm investingwithoptions in Mobile, Alabama.

The stock's valuation remains high - the forward price-to-earnings ratio is at about 56, and the stock is expected to stay volatile. Premiums - the price paid for options - must reflect that uncertainty and will be even more difficult to pin down.

"The real issue like everything else in the market is about value, and with Facebook, we simply don't know what their true earnings power is at this moment," said Jeff McAllister, vice president of education at options education website optionsanimal.com in Lehi, Utah.

"The first day of trading is going to be completely speculative to begin with and it will be aggressive - flooded with day-traders trying to make a quick turn in the market. But institutions are expected to be on the sidelines waiting patiently as disciplined traders do."

The options debut will offer opportunities to hedge against or take advantage of volatility in the shares through strategies combining stocks and options.

"From LinkedIn to Zynga to Pandora and now Facebook, the evidence is clear that the one certainty for investors is share prices of social media companies are volatile and will likely remain so," said Gareth Feighery, a founder of options education firm MarketTamer.com in Philadelphia.

PRICING RISK AN UNKNOWN UNTIL TRADING OPENS

Before the IPO, investors had an anchor on what to expect regarding the share price. But in the options market there is no indication of what the demand will be.

So implied volatility, a key component of an options price, which measures the market's perceived risk of future share price movement, remains an uncertainty until the first transactions.

"Figuring out the implied volatility is a chicken-and-egg scenario - that value won't be known until the market opens up, when market makers will gauge the supply and demand to price risk," Place said.

If there is significant demand for options, either through speculators or hedgers, the implied volatility will be elevated, and the price of the option will rise.

Place looked at the implied volatility readings of LinkedIn, Groupon, Pandora, Zynga, Yelp and Zillow from the day their options opened on each of these stocks as well as the stock and options volume.

"Using these past values as a guide, we can expect Facebook options to have a 30-day implied volatility between 65-85 percent," he said. "The mid 70s would be a good estimate."

Facebook is currently valued at about $87 billion, based on a share price on Thursday of $31.88. Shares of the much-anticipated initial public offering have fallen sharply since they opened at $42.05 on May 18.

The company went public at a valuation that built in no margin for error, Feighery said.

GRAB A BOX OF POPCORN AND WATCH VOLUME

Almost 23,000 contracts traded for the first day of LinkedIn, equivalent to 1.3 times the stock volume for that day, according to options analytics firm Trade Alert.

Applying that same multiple for Facebook and assuming it mellows out at 60 million shares per day would equate to almost 800,000 option contracts, said Trade Alert President Henry Schwartz. That may be unlikely since that would exceed the average daily option volume of Apple Inc of about 750,000 contracts.

"We could easily see a couple hundred thousand contracts trading for Facebook options simply because the underlying share volume is so strong and there is so much hype about the IPO," Schwartz said.

Options clearinghouse OCC has designated NYSE Amex Options, owned by exchange operator NYSE Euronext, to be the primary market for Facebook options. Initial strike prices below and above the share price are from $16 to $49, in $1 increments.

Bed Bug Treatment Options

Treating a bed bug infestation is no easy task. Bed bug extermination requires a very specific approach, as any missteps can result in worsening the infestation. Even finding a bed bug infestation is difficult without the use of outside sources. Because of the complexity involved with handling bed bug infestations, the cost of the extermination is significantly larger than for other common pests.

How much do bed bug exterminations cost?

Bed bug exterminations can easily total over $1000 for even the smallest apartments. These prices increase depending on the severity of the problem as well as the number of rooms being treated. Costs often include inspections, prep work, the extermination, and then a re-inspection. Although it may seem excessive, bed bug treatments are not something you want to skimp on due to the bugs' resilience. Jeff Eisenberg, CEO and President of Pest Away Exterminating, says "What do you call a 99 percent success rate when it comes to bed bugs? -- A failure." Bed bugs are a pest that need to be eradicated 100 percent, otherwise a single lone bed bug can restart the entire nightmare all over again.

Why are bed bugs so difficult to exterminate?

Eliminating bed bugs, even in a small apartment, is no easy task. Given their level of evasiveness, a long and thorough treatment process is required. For one, they're very difficult to spot. They almost always only come out at night when you are asleep in order to feed, so it's hard to find them in the act. During the day they can be hiding inside electrical sockets, your mattress, closets, drawers, etc . . . . As you can imagine, since bed bugs are so difficult to locate, they're also difficult to treat. Chemical treatment options can be hit or miss. A poorly done chemical treatment can simply spread the bed bugs out to other rooms or homes. Direct treatment options such as Cyronite are ineffective if bed bugs are behind a cover, whereas thermal heat treatments can damage objects in your home.

What is the most effective treatment option for bed bugs?

Jeff Eisenberg has created a treatment option known as Extreme Green which has had proven success over the years. Extreme Green involves the use of a dry steam of over 285 degrees. Bed bugs can't survive high temperatures and the Extreme Green treatment ensures their immediate demise. Because the temperature is so high the moisture evaporates almost immediately, ensuring that valued items don't get damaged. In addition, the Extreme Green treatment is 100 percent safe to the environment, children, and pets.

Of course treatment options do vary on a case by case basis. Find out what your best treatment options are by visiting www.pestawayinc.com.

Science & the Public: Redefining ?concern? over lead

Federal health agency accedes to two decades of accumulating toxicology data

Web edition : 3:58 pm

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on May 16 that it would no longer designate any particular blood-lead value in children as representing a ?level of concern.? Its justification: There is no threshold below which lead exposures are not a concern.

?Because there?s no identified safe exposure level for lead in children, ?level of concern? is a misleading statement,? explains Christopher Portier, who directs CDC?s National Center for Environmental Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

The old term implied lower concentrations might be okay. By jettisoning the old language, federal agencies are now free to advocate broadly what a growing number of lead toxicologists have been saying for decades: That because lead poisons the brain, and because there is no safe level, all affordable means should be considered to limit every child?s exposure to lead.

Until this week, U.S. federal agencies had held onto an outmoded 10 microgram per deciliter blood-lead level as "concerning."

In January, a CDC advisory committee concluded that made no sense. It noted that blood-lead levels below 10 ?g/dl have been linked to IQ deficits, impaired attention-related behaviors and poor school achievement. It also pointed out that data demonstrating harm from what were recently considered low levels of lead extend ?beyond cognitive function to include cardiovascular, immunological, and endocrine effects.?

This realization that lead harms multiple organ systems ? and its effects appear irreversible ? ?underscores the critical importance of primary prevention,? the advisory committee concluded. Bottom line: All kids are at risk, so all should be screened. Their parents need to be given specific blood lead numbers, it said, and they should be informed that no value is ?safe.? CDC has now formally accepted those recommendations.

Federal efforts from here out will target all children in the top 2.5 percent of blood-lead values for priority attention. That top exposure group now includes some 400,000 to 450,000 kids five years old and younger ? some with blood lead values as low as 5 ?g/dl.

For the families of children who fall into this newly defined category, the advisory panel recommended enhanced education on lead risks and exposure prevention, investigations to probe the source of a child?s exposures and long-term medical monitoring for symptoms of toxicity.

CDC has now endorsed this policy. Indeed, Portier says, ?by tracking where these [most exposed] children are found, we can find communities or neighborhoods where there appear to be high levels of lead and focus resources on something broader than just the individual child.?

Every four years, childhood cumulative lead values will be assessed nationally. The expectation is that with increased monitoring, remediation of leaded paints and plumbing, and vigilance, those national averages will continue to fall. But Portier says that even if national lead averages fall, his agency will continue to focus lead-prevention efforts on kids in the top 2.5 percent, ?because our target is to push this edge ? the highest exposure group ? down as fast as we possibly can.?

In its new announcement, CDC noted that it didn?t have the money to do everything its advisory board had suggested. For instance, the panel asked CDC to develop and implement a national primary-prevention policy ?to ensure that no children in the United States live or spend significant time in homes, buildings, or other environments that expose them to lead hazards.? While CDC said it liked the idea and would work on developing such guidelines for such a strategy, it also noted that its implementation of such a strategy ?is not currently practicable.?

CDC also agreed in principle with a need for educating physicians on the extent of low-level lead risks, on the need for followup testing of kids in the upper-exposure group until they fall below the 5 ?g/dl level, and on the need to alert local or state officials about childhood patients testing in the upper-exposure category. However, Portier?s agency noted, full implementation of each of these recommendations will be ?contingent on funding.?

Even a decade ago, Joel Schwartz of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston was warning that lead has received insufficient respect for its toxicity: Health officials err by deeming low even 2 ?g/dl in blood (5/5/01, p. 277), he argued at the time. Values then deemed fairly low appeared to slightly lower IQ. But small IQ deficits aren?t unimportant, he added, noting that one of his early analyses of lead?s impacts ?showed that if you lower the mean IQ of the U.S. population by one point, you lower the productivity of the economy by about one percent.?

In this era of economic fragility, that should serve as serious food for thought.

USC Dornsife Scientific Diving: Marine Ecosystem Based Management

By Nathaniel Kinsey

Marine ecosystem-based management (EBM) goes beyond politically drawn lines and looks at the many factors that go into effective natural resource management. For example, marine ecosystems offer human society many services providing food, fuel, mineral resources, and even pharmaceuticals. These services are of high anthropogenic value and the hope of EBM is that it offers a holistic approach that can properly balance the demand on the ecosystem in a beneficial way. The holistic approach according to COMPASS, a team of science based communication professionals that work to communicate science at the policy creation point, includes the integration of ? Ecological, social, economic, and institutional perspectives, recognizing their strong interdependences? (COMPASS Scientists 2005).

Effective EBM strategies are currently being implemented among ecosystems within the California Current (see map). The California Current is known for strong seasonal upwelling that is influenced by two climate factors: the El Ni?o Southern Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. These areas of upwelling are recognized as areas of high biodiversity and have high ecosystem value, thus it makes sense to set the best system too properly manage the natural resources found there.

Nevertheless, there are several challenges that face EBM implementation. The first of these is clearly defining a vision and a list of objectives for the ecosystem. As many ecosystems cover large regional areas, like the California Current, there are many stakeholders involved in the management. For example while the states of Washington, Oregon and California have a governors? agreement to work together on marine EBM implementation; they still face many differing coastal laws, political influences and environmental opinions. It will be sometimes be difficult for states to agree upon a list of common goals and objectives for the marine EBM. The second challenge is the lack of a national ocean governance policy framework. Ocean resources are managed by various organizations at the federal and state level. These agencies and organizations will have to cooperate effectively, which has proven to be difficult. Lastly, there are few examples of fully implemented marine ecosystem-based plans and their results. This lack of proven examples for this management style means that stakeholders are taking a risk by supporting the costly process of establishing marine EBMs (Leslie & Mcleod, 2007).

The task of establishing a marine EBM is a challenge, which at the very least requires cooperation at the state and federal levels of government, as well as stakeholder groups. Despite these challenges, the promise of effective marine ecosystem-based management strategies could provide a more sustainable, more economically prosperous future.

About the author: Nathaniel Kinsey recently graduated from the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Science with a BS in Environmental Studies. In Fall 2012, he will begin a Progressive Master?s Degree in the USC Environmental Studies Program where he will focus his studies on watershed conservation and management.

UPDATE: Local cancer patient's search for birth parents | WTVR.com ...

Update on local cancer patient's search for birth parents

CHESTER, Va (WTVR)- Three weeks ago CBS -6 brought you this story about a 45-year-old carpenter who has terminal cancer? and wants to find his birth family before it?s too late.

?Now, we can report he has found some answers, thanks to folks who saw the story. We have an update, but first, the beginning:

?Kenny Malpass of Chester always knew he was adopted.

?His father, Kenneth Malpass, says they didn?t want him to hear it from someone else, so they told him as soon as he could understand.

?It was a grand day when the 6-month-old boy came from Richmond Social Services to the family who had a daughter but wanted a son, too.

??They called about two o?clock and said they were on the way with him,? Mr. Malpass recalled. ?He?s been with us ever since. He fit right in, always been part of the family.?

?Kenny, now 45, became an avid fisherman and a carpenter. He later moved to Florida? and ran a bait shop.

?Kenny?s adoptive sister was killed 13 years ago. Their mom died nine months later from a broken heart.

?Now Kenny?s facing terminal lung cancer that has spread to his spine and ribs.

?He?ll stay at home with his adoptive dad, the way his life began.

??July first, 2010. They told me I was eat up with cancer,? Kenny said while at VCU Medical Center getting treatment. ?At that time, the doctor . . . was telling me three to six months . . . life expectancy. I looked at him, ?Naw, that ain?t happening.? That was 10 months ago.?

?He?s been through 24 radiation treatments, and has had chemotherapy eight times. ?It has a big effect on you,? Kenny said, his eyes filling with tears, when asked how a terminal diagnosis affected him. ?It changes your whole life.?

?His longtime search for his birth family has intensified. ?The good Lord is going to take me away from this earth one of these days. And I would really love to find my biological family before I pass.?

?Kenny discovered his Richmond adoption file went missing at Social Services. All the state had was a brief summary.

??It listed my name as Joseph Todd Harper and listed my mother?s name as Martha Harper,? he said. ?It said she was in her early 20s, something about my father was in his middle 20s, he had some military background.?

?He?s not mad at his mom or dad. ?Oh no. I feel, for whatever reason, she did it in my best interest. She did it out of love.?

?He figures she gave him up because she wasn?t married in an era when single moms were frowned upon.

??It?s always been a wonder, you know,? Kenny said as he fished in a pond near his home, ?where I come from, what were the circumstances, what?d she look like, am I Irish, German, Dutch??

?Does he have any brothers or sisters?

?Is his mom still alive? She would still be in her 60s. (Kenny was born on Jan. 2, 1966.)

?And what would he like to say to his mother if she hears of his search but doesn?t want to contact him?

??I love you regardless,? he replied, his eyes filling with tears.

?Since that story aired on June 29th, Kenny has been flooded with responses from people wanting to help.

??I was getting 30, 40 emails a day from people I didn?t even know,? Kenny said Tuesday while fishing one of his favorite ponds. ??Just wishing you the best, you?re in our love and prayers.? That was awesome.?

?Among those who reached out was Polly Conover of Chesterfield County, who was also adopted as a baby. She?s also a nurse, so she had an idea what he was going through.

??Someone once told me it?s like a book,? Conover said. ?It?s like a great novel, but they?ve ripped out the first chapter.?

?She posted Kenny?s story on adoptiondatabase.org, reaching out to JoAnne Stanik of Tuscon, Arizona. Stanik is the woman who found Polly?s birth family and a searcher many believe to be the best ?search angel? on the planet.

?Stanik had answers within hours. ?This birth took place in Richmond,? she said in a telephone interview. ?We look in the surrounding areas . . . and I was checking yearbooks and I found a woman with the same name and so I started researching.?

?Backtracking that yearbook entry, she found Kenny?s mother, who has a different last name, but still lives in the Richmond area.

?Stanik, whose team has reunited nearly 4,000 birth families during the past 11 years, proceeded carefully. She said a successful reunion is built on the first contact.

??For many birth mothers, it?s a very shocking call to get,? she said. ?They?ve had this secret all their lives.?

?Kenny called us right away with the news. His mother is alive, right here in town!

??When JoAnne called saying she found my birth mother, it was very emotional. Everyone in the house started crying. Actually, I felt like a? pregnant? lady with all the different emotions going through me.?

?But? in the next few days, Kenny found himself wrestling with new, powerful emotions.

?His mother isn?t ready to see him.

??Basically, when I talked to her I told her that I knew she done it in my best interest,? Kenny said. ?She said, ?yes. I did,? and that?s pretty much where it stood. She just said she hadn?t talked with or seen my father in many, many years.?

?Polly knows that feeling, too.

??No, they all don?t end happily,? she said. ?I?ve met my half-sister Renee, and my half-brother, that was happy. But my birth mother wanted nothing to do with me.?

?Kenny had said previously he was ready for a possible disappointment, but admitted the initial brief contact hit pretty hard.

??Through life I?ve watched talk shows, you know, where they reunited birth parents with siblings, you know it?s all rejoicing and hugging and crying. It?s a very joyful time. That?s the dream that I?d had.?

?But he?s believing time will open the door to his mother?s heart. He?s also found out he has a half-brother, who he has spoken with several times since our story aired.

??When you find out that you have a brother that you never knew you had, it?s like you don?t even know where the conversation is going to go from one sentence to the next.?

?He also has an aunt, nephews and lots of answers about his background.

?Kenny plans to keep on fishing for answers, hanging on with his adoptive father, who has loved him unconditionally for 45 years.

?His end may be near, but at last, he has connected with his beginning.

Quebec moves to end 14-week mass student strike

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Quebec's government moved late on Wednesday to end a sometimes violent 14-week mass student strike in the Canadian province that officials fear could harm the economy and deter tourists.

Premier Jean Charest said his government would shortly unveil legislation to ensure students could freely attend classes, although he did not give details. He did not address speculation that the bill would allow strikers to be fined.

Similar to protests in Europe, the students say the Quebec government's plans are part of a larger austerity campaign and will saddle them with debt upon graduation.

Charest made the announcement about 12 hours after protesting students stormed into a Montreal university in a face-off with those who want to go to class.

"It is time calm was restored ... the current situation has gone on for too long," he said in a late-night statement to reporters.

Some 155,000 people - more than a third of the college and university students in the predominantly French-speaking province - are striking to protest against a steep rise in what are some of the lowest tuition fees in north America.

Charest said he had been forced to act after what he described as a fruitless meeting on Tuesday between officials and students.

"Despite all these weeks of conflict, despite the injured, the vandalism, the violence ... the meeting last night led us to conclude that the student association representatives are not ready to respond to real overtures," he said.

The academic term in some of the worst affected colleges will be suspended until August.

Although most of the demonstrations are peaceful, students have clashed with police at times. Last week the Montreal subway had to be closed after protesters set off smoke bombs during the morning rush hour.

Eyewitnesses said around a hundred protesters charged into one of the University of Quebec in Montreal's campus buildings on Wednesday morning, barging into classrooms and telling students to leave. The university had earlier won an injunction against the demonstrators in an effort to keep classes open.

The strikers, many of them masked, chanted slogans such as "Injunctions won't make us fold." Last week Charest's education minister resigned in frustration.

Quebec officials admit they are worried about the possible impact on the economy, and on tourism, which is especially important in centers such as Montreal and Quebec City, the picturesque provincial capital.

"We are very concerned by this question ... some groups are trying to undermine the economy of Montreal and there is a limit to peoples' patience," Finance Minister Raymond Bachand told the National Assembly earlier in the day. He blames what he calls anti-capitalists and Marxists for the troubles.

The crisis is putting more pressure on Charest, who is already on the defensive over allegations of corruption and links between political parties and the mafia.

Polls show the Liberals trail the separatist Parti Quebecois, which seeks independence for Quebec. The party says Charest has not done enough to solve the dispute peacefully.

"He's soft on corruption and tough on the students," Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois told the National Assembly.

The strikers are unhappy about plans to increase annual tuition fees by C$1,625 ($1,610) over the course of five years, a 75 percent hike. Tuition fees are now C$2,168 a year, just over a third of the average U.S. public education cost.

Although Quebec students have a history of taking their grievances to the streets and Montreal is no stranger to riots, some tourism officials fear the scenes of violence could deter visitors from the crucial U.S. market.

The website of the U.S. consulate in Montreal urged U.S. citizens to avoid the demonstrations, saying "bystanders can quickly be caught up in unforeseen violence" or arrested.

City officials said visitors had little chance of ending up in trouble and described Montreal as very safe.
