Dan Hardy?s KO, Glover Teixeira?s submission and Jamie Varner?s upset highlight UFC 146 undercard

UFC 146's main card is about heavyweights, but the smaller weights made their mark on the preliminary card in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Jamie Varner scored an early upset with a TKO of previously unbeaten Edson Barboza. Taking the fight on short notice, Varner fought in the UFC for the first time since 2007. He gave Barboza trouble early with a takedown. Later in the first round, he pressured him against the fence, and peppered him with punches until Barboza fell to the ground. The bout was stopped at 3:23 in the first round.

"I can't believe it's me. It's so surreal. I just knocked out Edson Barboza, who was this monster in my mind," Varner said after the fight.

Dan Hardy broke his losing streak impressively. After losing four straight bouts, Hardy knocked Duane Ludwig out with a nasty left hook and followed with three elbows to end the fight at 3:51 in the first round.

"It felt great out there. You can put all the work in and if it goes wrong for 15 minutes then none of it matters. I've had a bad run. I took some time off and then I changed everything - new team, new training. It feels great. When you connect with the right shot you know its over. I put my arms up in celebration a little prematurely but when he looked back up I wasn't going to let it slip away so I went in and got the finish," Hardy said after the bout.

C.B. Dollaway used takedowns and ground control to get a unanimous decision win over Jason "Mayhem" Miller, 29-28, 30-26, 29-28. Miller had strong stand-up early but couldn't keep Dollaway's takedowns at bay. This is Miller's second loss in a row.

Diego Brandao and Darren Elkins fought a bruising, bloody fight to end the preliminary card with a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 decision win for Elkins.? In the grappling-filled bout, Brandao was strong in the first round, but the momentum swung in Elkins' favor in the second round. With a bloody ear, Elkins controlled the final round.

Glover Teixeira had plenty of pre-fight hype going into the UFC 146 prelims, and he lived up to it with a dismantling of Kyle Kingsbury. He used nasty ground and pound to beat up Kingsbury before finishing him with an arm-triangle choke at 1:53 in the first round.

"I'm really happy a debut in the UFC feels like my debut in MMA. It was that exciting to me. I'm just so happy to be here and after Dana's speech last night I just went out there and decided to go for it. I wanted him to remember my fight, and me," Teixeira said.

Paul Sass got in on the submission game with a slick armbar/triangle choke combination over Jacob Volkmann in the first round. Former WEC champ Mike Brown returned to vintage form with a unanimous decision over Daniel Pineda.

Cauterisation in Ayurveda ? Cures Various Diseases

?

Cauterisation is also known as Agnikarma. In case of Cauterisation in Ayurveda, Agni that is fire is involved. Therefore, it is known in ayurvedic term as Agnikarma. This treatment is also known as Dahan Karma. In cauterization process, the affected body part is burnt or destroyed with the help of hot instrument or caustic agent or an electric current or by freezing.

?

Why Cauterization is important?

?

Cauterisation in Ayurveda is much superior to any other medical therapy or surgery due to the following reasons:

?

? Diseases that cannot be cured with the help of surgery, medical therapy can be cured with Cauterisation in Ayurveda.

? By cauterization relapse of disease never occur

?

Following substances are utilized for Cauterization

?

? Pippali

? Cow's tooth

? Faces of goat

? Arrow

? Bhallatak seed

? Honey

? Jambavaustha

? Jaggery

? Ghee

? Probes, Metallic Instruments, needles, rings or metal coins

?

Cauterisation in Ayurveda is Performed on:

? Skin

? Muscle

? It can also be performed on ligaments, blood vessels, bones, joints, or as per the requirement and disease

Types of Cauterization

? Improper cauterization

? Inadequate cauterization

? Excess or strong cauterization

? Proper cauterization

Cauterization procedure:

Pretreatment

? It is necessary to examine the patient very carefully whether he really needs this treatment.

? The patient must be in empty stomach.

However, if there are conditions like oral cavity disease, fistula in ano, or renal calculus then it is not necessary and the patient can have light diet.

? Before cauterisation TT injection must be given

? CBC and Blood sugar test must also be done?

? The area where cauterisation has to be performed must be marked and cleaned.

? Never use spirit, however normal saline can be used

Main procedure

? Heat the instrument for causterisation properly

? Before performing Cauterisation paint the area with bhallataka oil

Pattern of Cauterisation is based upon the lesion

? For tumors use circular pattern

? If the lesion length is greater then use linear pattern

? At blood vessels use dotted pattern

? On the skin use flat design

It is essential to know what kind of cauterization is required to be done based on the condition of the patient

? ? During the process there must be cracking sound

? ? While burning skin or hair there will be bad odor

? ? skin gets contracted

? ? skin becomes reddish color

After treatment

The wounded area must be painted with honey or ghee. Yashti madhughrita or Shatadhautaghrita can also be used. It will help to reduce burning sensation and also the healing process will boost up.

? If the pain is too much then pain killers may be taken

? If the cauterization is done properly there will be relief. The patient will feel light and the discharge will cease.

Cauterisation can be performed during all seasons except summer and autumn. However, in case of emergency with the consent of patient it can be performed. The expert must take all kinds precaution based on the season, so that the patient can heal properly.

Facebook options debut a wild card for volatility

(Reuters) - Investors can hope the debut of options on Facebook Inc goes more smoothly than the long-awaited debut of the social networking service's stock on May 18.

While the stock's puts and calls are expected to be popular, the big wild card is volatility and ultimately, the options price.

Traders will get a fresh start on options on the Internet giant when the contracts are offered on U.S. options exchanges on May 29. BATS Options exchange, a division of BATS Global Markets, will list the options on May 30, following its standard practice of listing new options a day later than the other exchanges.

Plenty of uncertainty surrounds the stock, which debuted to much fanfare at $38 and immediately ran into problems.

Facebook's first day of trading was marred by technological glitches, and the company faces criticism that it sold too many shares, overwhelming demand. A week later, the stock was at $31.47, down 17.2 percent.

Options volume is expected to be robust. "It's a cocktail party stock and probably will attract a lot of participation from retail traders," said Steve Place, a founder of options analytics firm investingwithoptions in Mobile, Alabama.

The stock's valuation remains high - the forward price-to-earnings ratio is at about 56, and the stock is expected to stay volatile. Premiums - the price paid for options - must reflect that uncertainty and will be even more difficult to pin down.

"The real issue like everything else in the market is about value, and with Facebook, we simply don't know what their true earnings power is at this moment," said Jeff McAllister, vice president of education at options education website optionsanimal.com in Lehi, Utah.

"The first day of trading is going to be completely speculative to begin with and it will be aggressive - flooded with day-traders trying to make a quick turn in the market. But institutions are expected to be on the sidelines waiting patiently as disciplined traders do."

The options debut will offer opportunities to hedge against or take advantage of volatility in the shares through strategies combining stocks and options.

"From LinkedIn to Zynga to Pandora and now Facebook, the evidence is clear that the one certainty for investors is share prices of social media companies are volatile and will likely remain so," said Gareth Feighery, a founder of options education firm MarketTamer.com in Philadelphia.

PRICING RISK AN UNKNOWN UNTIL TRADING OPENS

Before the IPO, investors had an anchor on what to expect regarding the share price. But in the options market there is no indication of what the demand will be.

So implied volatility, a key component of an options price, which measures the market's perceived risk of future share price movement, remains an uncertainty until the first transactions.

"Figuring out the implied volatility is a chicken-and-egg scenario - that value won't be known until the market opens up, when market makers will gauge the supply and demand to price risk," Place said.

If there is significant demand for options, either through speculators or hedgers, the implied volatility will be elevated, and the price of the option will rise.

Place looked at the implied volatility readings of LinkedIn, Groupon, Pandora, Zynga, Yelp and Zillow from the day their options opened on each of these stocks as well as the stock and options volume.

"Using these past values as a guide, we can expect Facebook options to have a 30-day implied volatility between 65-85 percent," he said. "The mid 70s would be a good estimate."

Facebook is currently valued at about $87 billion, based on a share price on Thursday of $31.88. Shares of the much-anticipated initial public offering have fallen sharply since they opened at $42.05 on May 18.

The company went public at a valuation that built in no margin for error, Feighery said.

GRAB A BOX OF POPCORN AND WATCH VOLUME

Almost 23,000 contracts traded for the first day of LinkedIn, equivalent to 1.3 times the stock volume for that day, according to options analytics firm Trade Alert.

Applying that same multiple for Facebook and assuming it mellows out at 60 million shares per day would equate to almost 800,000 option contracts, said Trade Alert President Henry Schwartz. That may be unlikely since that would exceed the average daily option volume of Apple Inc of about 750,000 contracts.

"We could easily see a couple hundred thousand contracts trading for Facebook options simply because the underlying share volume is so strong and there is so much hype about the IPO," Schwartz said.

Options clearinghouse OCC has designated NYSE Amex Options, owned by exchange operator NYSE Euronext, to be the primary market for Facebook options. Initial strike prices below and above the share price are from $16 to $49, in $1 increments.

Bed Bug Treatment Options

Treating a bed bug infestation is no easy task. Bed bug extermination requires a very specific approach, as any missteps can result in worsening the infestation. Even finding a bed bug infestation is difficult without the use of outside sources. Because of the complexity involved with handling bed bug infestations, the cost of the extermination is significantly larger than for other common pests.

How much do bed bug exterminations cost?

Bed bug exterminations can easily total over $1000 for even the smallest apartments. These prices increase depending on the severity of the problem as well as the number of rooms being treated. Costs often include inspections, prep work, the extermination, and then a re-inspection. Although it may seem excessive, bed bug treatments are not something you want to skimp on due to the bugs' resilience. Jeff Eisenberg, CEO and President of Pest Away Exterminating, says "What do you call a 99 percent success rate when it comes to bed bugs? -- A failure." Bed bugs are a pest that need to be eradicated 100 percent, otherwise a single lone bed bug can restart the entire nightmare all over again.

Why are bed bugs so difficult to exterminate?

Eliminating bed bugs, even in a small apartment, is no easy task. Given their level of evasiveness, a long and thorough treatment process is required. For one, they're very difficult to spot. They almost always only come out at night when you are asleep in order to feed, so it's hard to find them in the act. During the day they can be hiding inside electrical sockets, your mattress, closets, drawers, etc . . . . As you can imagine, since bed bugs are so difficult to locate, they're also difficult to treat. Chemical treatment options can be hit or miss. A poorly done chemical treatment can simply spread the bed bugs out to other rooms or homes. Direct treatment options such as Cyronite are ineffective if bed bugs are behind a cover, whereas thermal heat treatments can damage objects in your home.

What is the most effective treatment option for bed bugs?

Jeff Eisenberg has created a treatment option known as Extreme Green which has had proven success over the years. Extreme Green involves the use of a dry steam of over 285 degrees. Bed bugs can't survive high temperatures and the Extreme Green treatment ensures their immediate demise. Because the temperature is so high the moisture evaporates almost immediately, ensuring that valued items don't get damaged. In addition, the Extreme Green treatment is 100 percent safe to the environment, children, and pets.

Of course treatment options do vary on a case by case basis. Find out what your best treatment options are by visiting www.pestawayinc.com.

Science & the Public: Redefining ?concern? over lead

Federal health agency accedes to two decades of accumulating toxicology data

Web edition : 3:58 pm

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on May 16 that it would no longer designate any particular blood-lead value in children as representing a ?level of concern.? Its justification: There is no threshold below which lead exposures are not a concern.

?Because there?s no identified safe exposure level for lead in children, ?level of concern? is a misleading statement,? explains Christopher Portier, who directs CDC?s National Center for Environmental Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

The old term implied lower concentrations might be okay. By jettisoning the old language, federal agencies are now free to advocate broadly what a growing number of lead toxicologists have been saying for decades: That because lead poisons the brain, and because there is no safe level, all affordable means should be considered to limit every child?s exposure to lead.

Until this week, U.S. federal agencies had held onto an outmoded 10 microgram per deciliter blood-lead level as "concerning."

In January, a CDC advisory committee concluded that made no sense. It noted that blood-lead levels below 10 ?g/dl have been linked to IQ deficits, impaired attention-related behaviors and poor school achievement. It also pointed out that data demonstrating harm from what were recently considered low levels of lead extend ?beyond cognitive function to include cardiovascular, immunological, and endocrine effects.?

This realization that lead harms multiple organ systems ? and its effects appear irreversible ? ?underscores the critical importance of primary prevention,? the advisory committee concluded. Bottom line: All kids are at risk, so all should be screened. Their parents need to be given specific blood lead numbers, it said, and they should be informed that no value is ?safe.? CDC has now formally accepted those recommendations.

Federal efforts from here out will target all children in the top 2.5 percent of blood-lead values for priority attention. That top exposure group now includes some 400,000 to 450,000 kids five years old and younger ? some with blood lead values as low as 5 ?g/dl.

For the families of children who fall into this newly defined category, the advisory panel recommended enhanced education on lead risks and exposure prevention, investigations to probe the source of a child?s exposures and long-term medical monitoring for symptoms of toxicity.

CDC has now endorsed this policy. Indeed, Portier says, ?by tracking where these [most exposed] children are found, we can find communities or neighborhoods where there appear to be high levels of lead and focus resources on something broader than just the individual child.?

Every four years, childhood cumulative lead values will be assessed nationally. The expectation is that with increased monitoring, remediation of leaded paints and plumbing, and vigilance, those national averages will continue to fall. But Portier says that even if national lead averages fall, his agency will continue to focus lead-prevention efforts on kids in the top 2.5 percent, ?because our target is to push this edge ? the highest exposure group ? down as fast as we possibly can.?

In its new announcement, CDC noted that it didn?t have the money to do everything its advisory board had suggested. For instance, the panel asked CDC to develop and implement a national primary-prevention policy ?to ensure that no children in the United States live or spend significant time in homes, buildings, or other environments that expose them to lead hazards.? While CDC said it liked the idea and would work on developing such guidelines for such a strategy, it also noted that its implementation of such a strategy ?is not currently practicable.?

CDC also agreed in principle with a need for educating physicians on the extent of low-level lead risks, on the need for followup testing of kids in the upper-exposure group until they fall below the 5 ?g/dl level, and on the need to alert local or state officials about childhood patients testing in the upper-exposure category. However, Portier?s agency noted, full implementation of each of these recommendations will be ?contingent on funding.?

Even a decade ago, Joel Schwartz of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston was warning that lead has received insufficient respect for its toxicity: Health officials err by deeming low even 2 ?g/dl in blood (5/5/01, p. 277), he argued at the time. Values then deemed fairly low appeared to slightly lower IQ. But small IQ deficits aren?t unimportant, he added, noting that one of his early analyses of lead?s impacts ?showed that if you lower the mean IQ of the U.S. population by one point, you lower the productivity of the economy by about one percent.?

In this era of economic fragility, that should serve as serious food for thought.

USC Dornsife Scientific Diving: Marine Ecosystem Based Management

By Nathaniel Kinsey

Marine ecosystem-based management (EBM) goes beyond politically drawn lines and looks at the many factors that go into effective natural resource management. For example, marine ecosystems offer human society many services providing food, fuel, mineral resources, and even pharmaceuticals. These services are of high anthropogenic value and the hope of EBM is that it offers a holistic approach that can properly balance the demand on the ecosystem in a beneficial way. The holistic approach according to COMPASS, a team of science based communication professionals that work to communicate science at the policy creation point, includes the integration of ? Ecological, social, economic, and institutional perspectives, recognizing their strong interdependences? (COMPASS Scientists 2005).

Map of East Pacific Ocean Currents including the Aleutian Current, California Current, and Central Pacific Gyre. Source: Dr. Elizabeth Turner / NOAA

Effective EBM strategies are currently being implemented among ecosystems within the California Current (see map). The California Current is known for strong seasonal upwelling that is influenced by two climate factors: the El Ni?o Southern Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. These areas of upwelling are recognized as areas of high biodiversity and have high ecosystem value, thus it makes sense to set the best system too properly manage the natural resources found there.

Nevertheless, there are several challenges that face EBM implementation. The first of these is clearly defining a vision and a list of objectives for the ecosystem. As many ecosystems cover large regional areas, like the California Current, there are many stakeholders involved in the management. For example while the states of Washington, Oregon and California have a governors? agreement to work together on marine EBM implementation; they still face many differing coastal laws, political influences and environmental opinions. It will be sometimes be difficult for states to agree upon a list of common goals and objectives for the marine EBM. The second challenge is the lack of a national ocean governance policy framework. Ocean resources are managed by various organizations at the federal and state level. These agencies and organizations will have to cooperate effectively, which has proven to be difficult. Lastly, there are few examples of fully implemented marine ecosystem-based plans and their results. This lack of proven examples for this management style means that stakeholders are taking a risk by supporting the costly process of establishing marine EBMs (Leslie & Mcleod, 2007).

Author photo by Jim Haw

Author photo by Jim Haw

The task of establishing a marine EBM is a challenge, which at the very least requires cooperation at the state and federal levels of government, as well as stakeholder groups. Despite these challenges, the promise of effective marine ecosystem-based management strategies could provide a more sustainable, more economically prosperous future.

About the author: Nathaniel Kinsey recently graduated from the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Science with a BS in Environmental Studies. In Fall 2012, he will begin a Progressive Master?s Degree in the USC Environmental Studies Program where he will focus his studies on watershed conservation and management.
